UFC on FOX: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos Will Complete Year's Greatest Fight Night
There have been plenty of hyped fights so far this year, but Saturday will prove to be the greatest fight night of the year.
Not only do you have superpowers Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos battling for the UFC heavyweight title in Anaheim, you have bitter rivals Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fighting for the third and final time in Las Vegas.
The magnitude of both fights is so spectacular fight fans may find themselves wondering if they're dreaming.
UFC president Dana White is already touting the Velasquez-Dos Santos fight as the greatest fight in UFC history. Velasquez, who embarrassed Brock Lesnar with a first-round TKO in October 2010, holds a mixed martial arts record of 9-0. Dos Santos, who defeated Shane Carwin via decision in June, holds an MMA record of 13-1. Both fighters are considered the top two heavyweight fighters in MMA by most publications.
Velasquez and Dos Santos have never fought each other and both are in the prime of their careers. Adding more spice to the fight, Velasquez knocked out Dos Santos' hero, Antonio Nogueira, in February 2010.
The strategy for Dos Santos against the favored Velasquez will be to keep the fight standing, as Velasquez, a former wrestler at Arizona State, is considered one of the most dangerous fighters in the world when he gets you on the mat. Dos Santos is one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA.
But as many a fighter has seen first hand, Velasquez isn't that bad of a striker, either. In fact, many consider him to be the best striker in the world. Per the LA Times, an episode of ESPN's Sports Science recorded Velasquez's punch at 2,230 pounds of force per square inch, the greatest ever recorded.
One thing Dos Santos does have going for him is that Velasquez is coming off torn rotator cuff surgery after injuring his shoulder against Lesnar. Velasquez himself has said he expects the fight to go the full five rounds.
But a lot of people are predicting the fight to end earlier, including White. When you have fighters that can destroy in so many ways, it generally doesn't take long before an opponent goes down.
One thing's for sure: If you are a fight fan, Saturday night is going to be a blast.
