Clay Guida, Ben Henderson and the Most High-Energy Fighters in MMA

John HeinisNov 10, 2011

While Saturday's UFC on Fox event has an epic main event in Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos, the co-main event also has Fight of the Year potential with two of the most relentless lightweights in the world colliding in the form of Clay Guida and Ben Henderson.

The biggest appeal of fighters like Guida and Henderson is that they are always coming forward, refusing to accept defeat, which almost always results in an entertaining fight.

This slideshow is a salute to the fighters who always push the pace and consistently entertain the fans.

Clay Guida

1 of 8

Let's start with the obvious: There's a reason Clay Guida has been called the Energizer Bunny on numerous occasions.

"The Carpenter" has been in plenty of wars over the course of his career, and not once has he ever looked the slightest bit fatigued.

While just about every fight Guida has been involved in has been action-packed, check out his Fight of the Year battle with Diego Sanchez from June 2009.

Whether or not Guida ever becomes a champion in the UFC, he will always have a plethora of fans who look forward to seeing him step into the Octagon.

Ben Henderson

Ben Henderson didn't get a nickname like "Smooth" by being sloppy or boring in the cage.

The former WEC lightweight champion is known for his slick grappling, but he also has some inventive striking and vicious ground-and-pound to round out his game.

"Bendo" is coming off arguably his best performance to date when he smashed Jim Miller at UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle, so it is not surprising that pundits are pegging him the next UFC lightweight champion.

Clay Guida and Frankie Edgar are certainly no pushovers, but if anyone at 155 pounds has the tools to win those fights, it's Ben Henderson.

Urijah Faber

"The California Kid" is one of the biggest fan favorites in the sport, and considering he has fought at the lesser established featherweight and bantamweight weight classes, it seems like a foregone conclusion that he must know how to put on a show.

The Team Alpha Male fighter boasts 20 finishes in 25 career wins, pushing the pace with his slick striking and relentless takedowns.

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz recently avenged his only career loss, defeating Faber via unanimous decision at UFC 132.

However, given the excitement of the Fight of the Night performance, fans wouldn't mind seeing Faber defeat Brian Bowles at UFC 139 and have a rubber match with "The Dominator" as a result.

Frankie Edgar

The reigning UFC lightweight champion cuts maybe five pounds max to make the 155-pound weight limit, but it doesn't matter, as his lightning-quick reflexes allow him to hang with far bigger opponents.

At 14-1-1, "The Answer" avenged his only career loss to Gray Maynard at UFC 136. This solidified him as one of the top five pound-for-pound greats in the sport.

While Edgar was a grinding wrestler with some submission know-how early in his career, he has developed some of the crispest, most technical boxing in the sport over the years.

Edgar's unbreakable will and nonstop cardio make him a very difficult opponent to game-plan for, as well as producing a style that is often a pleasure to watch.

Nick Diaz

5 of 8

Is it a surprise that a guy who runs triathlons doesn't get tired in the cage?

Love him or hate him, there is no doubt that Nick Diaz pushes a vicious pace that never slows down in every one of his fights.

His ridiculously high-volume boxing and elite jiu-jitsu have led him to 21 finishes in his 26 career victories.

The Cesar Gracie black belt looks forward to facing off against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 143, where many analysts are predicting an upset due to Diaz's aggressive and relentless style.

Jason Miller

6 of 8

Despite having some of the most elaborate entrances the MMA world has ever seen, "Mayhem" has always pushed a very hard pace every time he's walked into the cage.

The jiu-jitsu ace has 14 submission wins in 24 career victories, but Miller does not mind bull-rushing his opponents and throwing some leather on his feet either.

Miller's outlandish personality has been on full display on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter, where he has also stirred up some bad blood with fellow head coach Michael Bisping.

The two middleweights square off on the TUF 14 Finale on Dec. 3, where it seems safe to say that both those fighters are going to let it all hang out.

Donald Cerrone

7 of 8

"Cowboy," a former WEC lightweight champion, is a perfect 4-0 since coming over to the UFC.

Cerrone's 13 submission wins are a bit misleading. While his BJJ skills are well above par, he slapped on a majority of those submissions after downing his opponents with his vicious Muay Thai.

The Jackson MMA fighter has quickly launched himself into the co-main event of UFC 141, where he takes on Nate Diaz, with the winner taking a big step forward in a very competitive lightweight division.

Additionally, how can you not like a fighter who trains at a facility called "TapOut Ranch?"

Diego Sanchez

8 of 8

Remember the aforementioned 2009 Fight of the Year? Clay Guida wasn't just shadowboxing that whole time.

He was taking on Diego Sanchez, a fighter who expends more energy during his walkout than some guys do in a whole fight.

In 23 career victories, the highly touted grappler has produced quite a highlight reel, but his fights with Nick Diaz, Karo Parisyan and Joe Stevenson are just a few more examples of what a 15-minute fight looks like at full speed.

His relentless takedowns, ground-and-pound and submission attempts are more often than not a thing of beauty.

Additionally, Sanchez is another guy who will refuse to back down from a stand-up war if the situation arises.
