WWE Survivor Series 2009 Begins the WWE Youth Movement: Two Years Later

Justin WatryNov 10, 2011

I did not enjoy WWE Survivor Series too much as a whole. It was a good event, but I remember the night very well. It was a memorable—not in a good way—night for me, so my judgment may have been clouded from the get go.

I just couldn't get into the event. Again, my mind was elsewhere, but the show came and passed. However, when I watched the replay immediately afterwards, I loved the show! It was one of the best put together shows in a long time, and the future for WWE looked great!

Yes, the "youth movement" was already beginning to see some light. Yes, a few up and coming guys were starting to get some attention before this event. However, Survivor Series 2009 officially began the new wave of talent in my eyes.

Honestly, even the dark match of the evening was a great sign. Santino defeated Chavo Guerrero. Absolutely the right move! One guy had a future with WWE; the other did not.

Then you get to the actual show. Team Miz vs. Team Morrison is the perfect example for me to use. Let's look at the participants:

Team Miz: The Miz, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger

Team Morrison: John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Finlay, Evan Bourne and Shelton Benjamin

Do I even have to say who won? Of course, Team Miz won, and look at each side now two years later. John Morrison's team just looks embarrassing in 2011.

Now look at Miz's partners! Everybody but Drew is a former World/WWE Champion, and even Mr. McIntyre got the Intercontinental title. Just amazing to see 24 months later...

Next was Batista squashing Rey Mysterio like a bug! This was during Batista's big heel turn, and it was a great move. He did the best work of his career, while being built up to face John Cena at WrestleMania 26. Mysterio was not in the best of shape and didn't need to win here at all.

Team Kingston vs. Team Orton was next! This was a mixed bag, but the result was a step in the right direction. Here were the teams:

Team Kingston: Kofi Kingston, MVP, Mark Henry, R-Truth and Christian

Team Orton: Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase, CM Punk and William Regal

Again, this one was pretty even, but Kofi's team ended up winning. Two years later, the sides are pretty split. However, one could argue that Mark Henry puts their side over the top nowadays.

Just two well balanced teams, with the younger captain—Kofi—getting the big win over the established main event performer—Orton. Great match here!

The triple threat World title match did nothing for me. The Undertaker beat The Big Show and Chris Jericho to retain the gold. It was questionable, but it was the correct move. Jeri-Show was still going strong, and Taker needed to be champion for a few more months—due to the HBK story in 2010.

The divas had a five on five match as well. Nothing can be said here, as many of the women are not even with the company any longer. From what I remember, it was a nice match, with the face side winning the battle.

The main event was John Cena defending his WWE title against Triple H and Shawn Michaels. It was yet another triple threat match with a team involved. However, it was much better than the World title match. No doubt.

Also, in continuing with the theme of the night, the right man went over. Triple H is not a full time performer in 2011, while HBK is retired. John Cena is still the top man in the entire industry and will be for any more years to come.

Again, upon first viewing, I did not think much of this event. After looking at it once more, you can definitely see WWE lay the ground work for their future. Two years later, the "youth movement" is starting to pay off for WWE...
