WWE: 5 Reasons This Was the Best Year of the PG Era

A.D. Christian VitaleNov 17, 2011

2011 has been a great year for the WWE as a whole. We have seen some great matches, memorable feuds, epic returns and an overall better TV product.

Today, I am going to list five specific examples that support why 2011 is the greatest year in the PG era. For anyone who doesn't know, the PG Era began in 2008, when the WWE programming became PG-rated.

The WWE Can Always Surprise Us

1 of 6

Many fans believe that the WWE can't give fans big surprises like they used to. I have to disagree with that.

  • This past year, the WWE did not disappoint
  • We saw the returns of Kevin Nash and Booker T at the Royal Rumble
  • We saw Alberto Del Rio win the first ever 40 man royal rumble
  • We saw the return of both Triple H and Undertaker on the same Raw
  • We saw the final match of Edge's career at WrestleMania 27
  • We saw The Rock and John Cena book a dream match at WrestleMania 28

The list goes on and on.

New People Are at the Top

2 of 6

For the majority of the PG Era, the WWE had the same people feuding in the main event scene. Some of these names include:

  • John Cena
  • Randy Orton
  • Triple H
  • Edge
  • Chris Jericho
  • Batista
  • Undertaker
  • Rey Mysterio
  • Kane

At WrestleMania 27, we had two new people compete in the world title matches. The Miz was the WWE Champion, and Alberto Del Rio was the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The WWE finally has enough star power to take people like Randy Orton and Triple H out of title matches.

The Rock Comes "Home"

3 of 6

On February 14th, 2011, the WWE shocked its fans with the return of The Rock.

In the following weeks, it was clear that there was a bigger reason for him coming back. After WrestleMania 27, The Rock accepted John Cena's challenge for a match at WreslteMania 28.

I know that The Rock-vs.-John Cena dream match will take place in 2012, but the storyline played a big role throughout this year.

If it wasn't the PG Era, we wouldn't have seen the promos that Rock made.

I don't know about you, but when John Cena gave Rocky the "AA" a week before WrestleMania, I went nuts.

The Feuds Actually Go Somewhere

4 of 6

The only thing I hate worse than a bad storyline is a good storyline that falls flat.

When Wade Barrett led the Nexus to Monday Night Raw, fans were expecting them to take complete control. At first, fans were happy to see the Nexus cause havoc and break the WWE from its norm.

After awhile, though, it was clear that the Nexus would never be able to take out John Cena. Before long, the Nexus was under new leadership and eventually disbanded.

In 2011, we have seen some amazing feuds. Some of these include:

Miz vs. Cena vs. Rock

Christian vs. Orton

Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio

The PG Era Is Done

5 of 6

The reason behind me creating this article was to show the final months in the PG Era.

On June 27th, 2011, CM Punk gave his historic promo. Most believe believe that this event brought us into our newest era, "The Reality Era."

Although I wasn't the biggest fan of the PG Era, it is still important to reflect back on it and see how it continues to affect the product today.
