Penn State Riots: PSU Fans Partake in Most Embarrassing Sports Moment Ever

Andrew KulhaNov 10, 2011

The students and fans of Penn State university should be ashamed of themselves, as they have conducted and taken part in the most embarrassing and shameful act in sports history.

That may seem like a very general statement, but even I am ashamed, and I have nothing to do with the situation.

I was embarrassed watching those riots take place in the aftermath of Penn State University firing long-time head coach Joe Paterno.

I was embarrassed for the university, and I was embarrassed for those who were being poorly represented by the throngs of angry supporters.

Not only that though, I was embarrassed to be a human.

I struggled with the fact that I belong to a species that is capable of overlooking such horrific and shameful acts in the name of a football team and coach.

I struggled to wrap my mind around the fact that a group of people could blindly support a man who essentially turned his back to reports of the most heinous and despicable crime that someone can commit.

Paterno many not be guilty by the letter of the law, but I find it absolutely sickening that anybody in their right mind could support the decision that he made.

It was painful to watch the rioters chant, overturn things and break property in the name of something they couldn't comprehend.

This had nothing to do with Paterno, and that's what made the riots so sad.

Paterno was collateral damage in a systemic purge, but to consider him a victim in this situation is truly wrong.

The real victims are the numerous lives that have been impacted and or destroyed because Paterno chose to do the bare minimum.

His legacy, his meaning to Penn State and his overall status should instantly diminish in light of the tragedy, but instead the rioters made it about him.

They were angry that he was terminated by phone, when in reality they should have been outraged that a member of Paterno's staff was allegedly allowed to emotionally and physically destroy young children on their campus.

They were furious that their legend's name came under fire, but the reality of the situation is that they should be furious that Jerry Sandusky has not yet been fully brought to justice.

The pure ignorance and idiocy of the riots is staggering, and I am embarrassed to know that I woke up this morning as part of a species that was so short-sighted and selfish, as to completely disregard the actual human life and psyche that was victimized.

Paterno isn't a victim. If anything, he was an enabler.

We've seen riots in the name of sports before, and none of them have been anything to be proud of.

This takes the cake, though.

This wasn't a riot over a big win or a heartbreaking loss. This didn't happen to rejuvenate a city or support a cause.

These riots were the byproduct of shortsightedness and selfishness.

Instead of thinking about the victims, all the rioters could do was think about their hurt feelings.

It truly was the most embarrassing display of support I have ever seen in my life, and it will go down as one of the worst moments in the history of sports.
