How Much Did This Ugly Chapter in Penn State Football Cost the University?

Eric BowmanNov 10, 2011

The Penn State scandal continues to get worse, and it will take the university a long time to recover from these dark days, as the national brand the school has built over the last few decades has been tainted.

This is the biggest scandal in sports history, and it is slowly but surely destroying a university that one man took so long to build.

This is evidence of how one man's actions can ruin things for all, and the Nittany Lions will struggle to get past this.

The Nittany Lions were slammed with a major scandal, as former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was allegedly using his charity, Second Mile, to molest young boys on Penn State grounds.

In 2002, former Penn State quarterback Mike McQueary, a graduate assistant at the time, witnessed Sandusky molesting a young boy in the locker room showers.

Instead of calling the police, McQueary told Joe Paterno, who then told his superiors. The incident was never reported, and it sparked the downfall of Penn State.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz stepped down from their positions after being charged with perjury and failure to report.

Paterno announced on Wednesday that he would retire at the end of the season, but the Penn State Board of Trustees made the decision later that night that they were firing Paterno.

As if things couldn't get worse, the students at Penn State decided to riot.

Their actions were absolutely ridiculous, and it greatly hurt Penn State in more ways than one.

The Nittany Lions are going to suffer for quite some time thanks to this scandal and the events that have taken place in the last few days.

Had the police been called many years ago then all of this could have been avoided. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, and Penn State is paying the price.

A price that costs so much it will take years for the school's image to be repaired, and for the football program to thrive again.

Replacing a legendary coach will not be easy, and this alleged sex scandal places a negative outlook on Penn State that will have people talking about it forever.
