UFC 1 on FOX: Why the Winner of Ben Henderson/Clay Guida Is the No. 1 Contender
On Saturday, November 12th, the UFC will be featured on FOX for the very first time.
Unlike traditional UFC cards, only the heavyweight title bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will featured on FOX.
Another match that is highly anticipated will be Ben Henderson vs. Clay Guida.
Henderson and Guida are two of the UFC's top lightweight contenders. Although it looks like the winner will be the next challenger for Frankie Edgar, nothing is promised when it comes to a title shot.
Here are the reasons why the winner should be next in line.
Both Men Will have had good winning streaks
1 of 5Both Guida and Henderson have on good title runs as of late.
Guida’s four-fight winning streak includes wins over Takanori Gomi and Anthony Pettis.
Henderson, on the other hand, comes into the fight having won 12 of his last 13 fights and a 12-2 overall record.
A win would give Henderson his third straight win in the UFC.
They’ve both eliminated top title contenders
2 of 5Clay Guida has fought his way through the lightweight division since he’s been in the UFC.
Although he’s been in the UFC since 2006, Guida’s biggest win came in June, when he defeated former top contender Anthony Pettis.
Henderson may have lost to Pettis last year, but he has made the most of his UFC career thus far.
Henderson has won both of his UFC fights, including his domination of Jim Miller in August. Henderson also holds two victories over Donald Cerrone.
Other title contenders have also been eliminated
3 of 5The lightweight division is one of, if not, the most stacked division in MMA today.
With so many top lightweights, everyone likes to throw their name into the mix.
Both Guida and Henderson knocked off two of the UFC’s top contenders in their last fights.
Another top contender, Melvin Guillard recently lost to Joe Lauzon at UFC 136.
Donald Cerrone is another possible name that could be thrown into the mix, but he has been more interested in staying active as opposed to a title shot.
Gilbert Melendez is not in the UFC yet
4 of 5Although UFC president Dana White wanted to get Melendez in the UFC ASAP, he will have at least one more fight in Strikeforce.
Odds are the current Strikeforce champ would have received a title shot against Edgar.
Although they aren’t Melendez, Henderson and Guida aren’t bad options to have as backups.
Both Men Would Be Exciting Fights for Edgar
5 of 5If there are two guys who could match Edgar on endurance, it’s Guida and Henderson.
Although Gray Maynard had Edgar hurt both times in their recent title fights, he was unable to keep the pace up and capitalize.
Henderson and Guida are two guys who can go at a relentless pace and have the ability to finish fights.
Edgar may have a size advantage against either man, but he's proven time and time again that he has more heart than anybody in MMA right now.
It would be interesting to see who comes out on top after a five-round war with any of these three.
