Jaguars vs. Colts: What to Look for in Sunday's Game
If there was ever a game on the Jaguars' schedule that should read "trap game," this is the one.
While the Indianapolis Colts are clearly the worst in the NFL, it may not surprise you that this could be the week the 0-9 team could be world-beaters. Their first win of the season could come against a team they have gotten the best of since the NFL changed its divisional format.
Yes, you heard what I said. The Colts could get their first win of the season.
Oh, how that "Suck for Luck" mantra will be blown to bits. Everyone with a one-win record will be fighting for draft supremacy.
The game, being played at Lucas Oil Field, may be the best chance for the Colts to win all season. While they do not appear as strong as the Jaguars (I cannot believe I said that), they have tools in place in a passing game that has given Jacksonville fits for many years.
Let's see how well the Jags do against a team without a man named Manning throwing balls all over the field.
As the game unfolds, look for these things as points of interest.
The Team Does Not Have to Face Peyton Manning
1 of 10For the Jaguars, that is a good thing. Peyton Manning has some of his best games against Jacksonville.
Seeing Curtis Painter across the line may make things a little easier and calm the defense a bit.
Could This Be the Week We See Blaine Gabbert Grow Up?
2 of 10We keep waiting for Gabbert's "breakout" game but it has not happened yet. Gabbert should be able to throw against the Colts' linebackers and secondary.
If the line can hold him upright, he could finally throw for over 250 yards.
Look for Clint Session to Have a Good Game
3 of 10Session was a former Colts linebacker who bolted for warmer weather in Florida. He said there was a "love affair" with the team and wanted to sign with the AFC South rival Jags.
Session has been a part of the new defense the Jaguars have implemented.
The Team May Not Need to Rely on Josh Scobee This Time
4 of 10Don't hold your breath. Scobee kicked a 59-yarder last year in Jacksonville as time expired to give the Jaguars a win.
Scobee has been aces this year so far. Will the second half prove to be as good to him and the team?
Can on Receiver Make a Difference?
5 of 10Probably not, but the team is hoping Brian Robiske can add a spark to a shallow receiving corps.
Mike Sims-Walker was placed on IR after two games with the team and Jason Hill leads the receivers with three touchdowns this season.
Can Mike Thomas, Hill and Robiske become a three-headed monster?
Say Hello to the Pass Rush
6 of 10Curtis Painter may be the most non-descript passer the Jags face all season. Let's hope the defensive line can put pressure on him.
A steady dose of pass rush and batting balls will do wonders to help control the time of possession.
Look for Maurice Jones-Drew to Have a Monster Game
7 of 10Jones-Drew always plays well against the Colts. This week should be no different.
MJD is still among the league leaders in rushing and will use his bowling-ball body to run through the Colts defensive line and linebackers.
Blaine Gabbert, Meet Marcedes Lewis
8 of 10Lewis needs more touches in the passing game. A lot of throws to the Pro Bowler have been too low or behind him.
If Gabbert stays steady and has time to find him, Lewis will be open in the Colts' secondary.
The Jaguars Will Control the Time of Possession
9 of 10If the running game is as good as advertised and there are times when Gabbert can throw at will, then this will be a quick game and one that the Jags should win.
If there are quick strikes and a lot of possession changes, it will not look good for the Jaguars.
Don't Look Ahead
10 of 10The next two weeks are very easy for the Jaguars to win. The Colts and the Cleveland Browns do not strike fear in NFL teams.
The Jaguars need to be 4-6 after next weekend, but they cannot look ahead to Cleveland and flop the Colts.
That would be a big mistake. Head Coach Jim Caldwell is fighting for job security just like Jack Del Rio.
