Penn State Scandal: Most Surreal Images from Shameful Week in Happy Valley
Happy Valley was nothing but sad this past week, and the shameful scandal that rocked the institution has left a black eye that will never heal.
In a week full of startling revelations and enough finger-pointing to make our forefathers sick, what’s being lost is that innocent children were robbed of their innocence by a coward named Jerry Sandusky.
Joe Paterno has built a legacy unlike anything college football has ever seen, and for it to be torn down in a matter of hours by the actions of one rogue degenerate is terrible.
In what could be the saddest week in the history of the program, Penn State has faced inside allegations of perjury, a former coach being charged with child molestation and the media calling for the head of an American legend in Paterno.
Sometimes an image captures the moment better than anything a word can relay.
Public Enemy No. 1
1 of 16If you don't know the grim details of what former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is accused of doing, they can all be found in the Pennsylvania Attorney General's grand jury indictment.
There have been many people vilified during this process, but the person shouldering the most blame needs to be this degenerate.
Top Penn State Brass Goes Down
2 of 16The second biggest criminals in this matter are Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and university Vice President Gary Schultz.
Both men have been charged with perjury in the case against Jerry Sandusky, and it was because of their alleged negligence that countless more boys were violated by this pedophile.
Penn State Issues a Statement
3 of 16Penn State University played this whole situation wrong from jump street, and their failure to immediately address the issue made the accusations of protecting their own even louder.
Their failure to address the sex scandal involving Jerry Sandusky also brought much of the fury unleashed down on Joe Paterno who did not deserve it.
Paterno Talking to Supporters on His Lawn Via Window
4 of 16Through tears and window, the 84-year-old coach talks to the students who are holding a support rally on his front yard and thanks them.
This image is sad because Paterno is a little old man just trying to do what’s right, and he is being painted as such a villain.
Joe Pa Talks to His Supporters on His Front Lawn
5 of 16After all of the turmoil over the last two days or so, Joe Paterno was ready to address the media, whether Penn State liked it or not.
Paterno felt like he was getting a raw deal, and since the school was not defending him, he had to defend himself.
The Media Frenzy Outside Paterno's Home
6 of 16Poor Joe Paterno. Despite having a media circus crash down on him, the head coach of Penn State football is trying to get his students ready for the game against Nebraska Saturday.
Retirement won’t seem so bad when he doesn’t have to deal with this mess anymore.
It's Not All Love for Joe Pa
8 of 16While many people are supporting Joe Paterno, there are people who feel he could have done more.
These students and detractors alike have every reason to say the things that they are saying, and their points are more than valid.
Students Want Answers
9 of 16The student demonstrations aren't directed at any one person for the most part, but they are all seeking answers as to who else knew about these crimes.
So far, they haven’t gotten much from their school.
The Local Flavor
10 of 16It’s good to see certain fans of PSU are legitimately crazy, no matter what the event.
Students Express Their Support
11 of 16There is no better place to get a reaction than from the students living it in the moment.
When a scandal as terrible and devious as this hits a program like Penn State, everyone and their brother has an opinion.
Joe Pa's Support Group
12 of 16After returning from practice on Tuesday, the media and fans were gathered on Paterno’s front lawn ready to ask him any questions he would answer.
The outpouring of support collided with the media trying to get the facts, and Paterno handled it as well as an 84-year-old man could.
Mike McQueary Is a Scapegoat
13 of 16Mike McQueary is one of the better assistant coaches in college football, but he is also a main witness in the case against Jerry Sandusky.
He has also become a scapegoat in this matter.
After reading the court documents about what happened, it’s obvious that McQueary could have done more to stop what Sandusky was doing, but to say he did nothing would be incorrect.
A Legend Gets a Black Eye
14 of 16The legend of Joe Paterno is as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and arguably one of the greatest coaches of any sport.
While his legendary status can’t be questioned, this Sandusky sex scandal has left a black eye on the end of his career.
The Truth of the Matter
15 of 16As a Penn State fan and a human being, this is one of the scariest, maddening stories that I have ever read, and I hope Jerry Sandusky rots in prison.
The tear this Nittany Lion sheds should be for the victims of Sandusky’s madness and the wake of destruction his careless actions have left.
"Inspiration" Mural Gets Altered
16 of 16Much like the face of Penn State getting altered forever by Jerry Sandusky's scandal, so to will the mural outside the student bookstore.
Artist Michael Pilato is painting out Jerry Sandusky and replacing it with an empty chair where his image used to live.
The Patriot-News has a report on the alteration of the famous painting.
