Jerry Sandusky Scandal: Potential BCS Season Tarnished by Shocking Allegations

Wes ODonnellNov 9, 2011

Jerry Sandusky hasn't been a football coach at Penn State for more than a decade.

Twelve years later, his name and heinous sex-crime charges are set to bring a potential BCS season to a crashing halt.

Lost amid the massive scandal that is currently engulfing Penn State University is the fact that the Nittany Lions are the current Big Ten leaders with three games to go.

Joe Paterno, in his 18 seasons in the Big Ten, has only won the conference title three times.

Needless to say, accomplishing that goal is a big deal.

Penn State still has three tough games to play—including a visit from new Big Ten rival Nebraska—this Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Nobody is talking about that.

Paterno has announced his intention of retiring at season's end. Whether or not the school will grant him that privilege remains to be seen.

It is now Wednesday, and many people want Paterno to step down immediately—even prominent athletes/personalities like FOX's Michael Strahan.

Unfortunately, the current Penn State players are unfairly damaged by this entire situation.

Rather than focusing on a top-20 opponent entering Happy Valley for the first time as a Big Ten foe, the players are not even sure if they'll have their coaching staff on hand for the game.

Instead, every single player on the roster who has dedicated countless hours to winning eight of nine games so far this year is cast aside in the wake of what is going on.

There are many people who want Paterno out immediately, as in he doesn't coach another game—ever.

How the university plans to handle this will likely come about by the end of the day today or tomorrow.

If Paterno does happen to coach the game on Saturday, the only thing people will be focusing on is the postgame press conference.

It is a real shame that a group of young men are affected so heavily by something that has absolutely nothing to do with them. The fact of the matter is that, because Paterno and others failed to act all those years ago, this particular team is left helpless with no voice.

It wasn't fair to the young boys allegedly affected by Sandusky that the university didn't act then.

And it isn't fair to the 2011 Nittany Lions football players that the university is acting now.
