Penn State Sex Scandal: Why Joe Paterno Is to Blame for Current Shame
There is only one leader of this Penn State program, one person that is the face of not only this football program, but also this university. There is one person that will get the brunt of this blame, just because he is tied into this scandal. That person is head coach Joe Paterno.
Joe Paterno has been with this program since the late 1950’s and has been head coach since the 1966 season. That’s over 60 years with one employer, which is an outstanding accomplishment for anyone.
His detractors have wanted Paterno gone from the program for a long time due to his age. Now those detractors may finally have their wish, as Paterno is shouldering a lot of blame after the Jerry Sandusky allegations.
And he should be the person to take the brunt of the anger from those who have been hurt in connection with these disgusting allegations against Sandusky. He is the person who is in charge of the Penn State football program and he should have known everything that was going on inside and out of his team.
So far what we know from what was released from the grand jury is that Paterno was told of Sandusky getting caught by a graduate assistant and then told the Penn State Athletic Director, but not any local authorities.
It must have been hard for Paterno to hear of the news, as Sandusky was a trusted assistant and for some time was even going to take over for Paterno after his retirement.
For Paterno to go to the local authorities and report the incident would have been hard for him to do, but it’s something he should have done.
Because Paterno did the bare minimum, he is now the face of this shame and has a litany of requests for his resignation from the Penn State program.
Joe Paterno is known for a lot of things to a lot of people. His legacy is still about his work on and off the field. It is a shame that the end of his legendary career now has this stain on it.
Everyone wanted to know when the career of Joe Paterno was going to end. Now they have their answer, as it looks like the end is near.
