Survivor Series 2011: 5 Reasons John Cena Should Turn Heel at Survivor Series
As the wrestling world (or the WWE Universe, as Vince likes to call it) knows by now, John Cena will be teaming up with The Rock at Survivor Series to take on The Miz and R-Truth in Madison Square Garden.
This match up could make for some simple booking: Cena and The Rock main event the show, destroy Miz and Truth and walk out of the Garden victorious. I guess that would be cool, right? Wrong.
Quite frankly, that would actually bore the hell out of me.
What would spice things up, to say the least, is if John Cena turned heel in Madison Square Garden, which would send shock waves through the wrestling world. Everything has to happen for a reason, and here's why this should happen.
No. 1: His New T-Shirt
1 of 5WWE made sure to tell us that Twitter was buzzing when John Cena debuted his new T-shirt at Vengeance last month. "Rise Above Hate" is all that it says on the front, departure from the "Never Give Up" slogan that was on his last three.
The thing about this shirt is that it could be interpreted as a kid-friendly, self-motivating message. Or, it could be viewed as the perfect shirt for a heel, which is the way I took it. The shirt is black, which is usually associated with heels, and is a departure from his usual Fruity Pebble-like color schemes. Could the shirt represent a darker turn for Cena? I hope so.
Plus, heels are hated. If Cena turns heel, he can use that time and time again to generate heat against him.
No. 2: To Not Bury the Miz and R-Truth
2 of 5The Miz and R-Truth have been doing some great work lately in the ring, and on the microphone. They have been in the middle of some big-time story lines and none will be bigger than the one at Survivor Series. Why build them up over the last three or four months as two renegade heels, only to tear them down in one match at Madison Square Garden.
Cena should turn heel and help The Miz and R-Truth pick up a victory. Cena turning heel will overshadow them a bit, but the WWE would still have two of its younger stars look strong moving into the future.
No. 3: Advance the Storyline
3 of 5There has to be some steam coming out of Survivor Series that's making people salivate for this match at Wrestlemania. If both the Rock and Cena remain good guys all the way to Wrestlemania, that just wouldn't do it for me. Cena turning heel not only progresses the story a bit, but also becomes the hottest angle in wrestling.
No. 4: It Would Be Too Predictable
4 of 5How many times have you seen this: John Cena comes into the match the favorite and gets his butt kicked for 20 minutes, only to make a heroic comeback in the last five minutes to win. Every day for the last five years? I thought so.
It would also be predictable for Cena and The Rock to win at Survivor Series. Almost too predictable, which leads me to believe that it won't happen. It's about time the WWE takes some risks with its booking, and this could be their chance.
No. 5: It's About Damn Time
5 of 5John Cena has had the same act for five years. Is John Cena immune from turning heel? The WWE even turned Stone Cold Steve Austin back to heel in 2001, although it failed. But that was because everyone loved Steve Austin.
Let's face it, Cena is booed by half the audience anyway. Why not turn the other half against him, too? He's needed something fresh for a long time.
We all saw what it did for Hogan back with the NWO, and Hogan had a way more popular run as a face than Cena. It's about time for the WWE to do this.
It's the perfect circumstance: Madison Square Garden with everyone's favorite, The Rock. In my humble opinion, you couldn't ask for a better spot.
