NFL Power Rankings: Top Teams That Are Going to Fall in Week 10
In a season that has been marred by so much mediocrity—or what the NFL calls parity—it is very hard to find any elite teams. We know that the Green Bay Packers are the best team, but they have looked beatable at various points this season.
All of this average play makes the top of the power rankings such a fluid and volatile position. There is no one that is safe. Every week we think that we know which teams are going to take big leaps, and they wind up losing to the Dolphins or the Rams.
There are a few teams bunched together in the top 10 that could easily be ranked lower, but there has been no one that has stepped up to take their place.
Here are three top-10 teams that are going to fall down the rankings in the coming weeks.
Green Bay Packers
Watching the Green Bay Packers play, I can’t help but wonder if they are the 2007 New England Patriots reincarnated.
Aaron Rodgers sure looks like Tom Brady did that year, but the rest of the team surrounding him leaves me with a lot more questions than answers. They have no running game and the secondary is terrible.
All of their problems are masked right now because they are winning, but what happens when they play a defense that can keep up with them? Can their defense make a play when it has to?
We saw the 2007 Patriots run the table in the regular season before getting picked off in the Super Bowl. Something similar could happen to the Packers if they don’t solve their defensive woes.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have the second-best record in the NFL at 7-1and can clinch the NFC West in two weeks if they keep winning. But the offense still continues to be a source of problems for this team.
A great defense and soft schedule have made them look better than they are, but the biggest question that has yet to be answered is if Alex Smith can lead this offense back if the team gets down by two or three touchdowns early in a game.
Frank Gore is running the ball like he did in his breakout season of 2006, and the offensive line keeps getting better with each game.
Still, this is a quarterback driven league, and Smith has not had to be the focal point of the offense.
New England Patriots
The only team on this particular list that actually lost in Week 9, the New England Patriots, has been exposed in the last two weeks.
The defense is still as soft as Mr. Stay Puft and there are no signs that things are going to get better this season.
The one constant they have always had is Tom Brady, but even he is starting to show some cracks in the armor. He is still getting his yards and touchdowns, but he is starting to throw more interceptions because he is trying to force the ball into tight windows.
If the offense isn’t able to put up 30 points on a consistent basis, which is what they did last season, they are going to be a nine-win team.
