Bears vs. Eagles: A Look at the Eagles' Big Offseason Additions
The Chicago Bears face a tough Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.
The Bears travel to Philadelphia having won three of their last four games against the Eagles, and their last four against Michael Vick.
While the Bears played great in their 31-26 win against the Eagles at Soldier Field in 2010, they're facing an Eagles team that made some huge free-agent signings in the offseason.
The Eagles were nicknamed "the dream team" by one of their new players, backup quarterback Vince Young. The Eagles' season started off more like a nightmare as they went 1-4 in their first five games. After two victories, including a blowout win against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night, the Eagles appear to be back to their winning form.
Despite improving their defensive line in the offseason, the Eagles rank 19th in run defense through Week 8. The Cowboys abandoned the run after they fell behind 21-0 early in Sunday night's game, limiting their yards on the ground despite averaging 8.5 yards per carry in the game.
For the Bears to build on their two-game winning streak, they should continue to run Matt Forte as much as they can. The Eagles' run defense is their big weakness at this stage in the season, and a potent Bears running game could keep the Eagles' high-powered offense on the sidelines.
The majority of the Eagles' personnel changes were on defense, and despite their early struggles, Philadelphia is ranked 11th in the NFL.
Here is a look at the Philadelphia Eagles' big offseason additions in 2011.
Vince Young, Quarterback
1 of 5With his career in need of a makeover, Vince Young happily signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason.
Displaying inconsistent play and immaturity, Young's time in Tennessee was difficult, leading to his departure.
The former No. 3 draft pick out of Texas, Young has a similar skill set to the Eagles' star quarterback, Michael Vick. Young is big at 6'5" 233 pounds. He can run effectively like Vick, and has a strong arm.
While he likely won't see the field on Sunday against the Bears, Young could make an impact if a Vick injury necessitates his appearance.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Cornerback
2 of 5The Eagles added to their potent secondary by getting cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from the Arizona Cardinals in a trade for quarterback Kevin Kolb.
Rodgers-Cromartie was a Pro Bowl cornerback in 2009, and has 13 interceptions in four seasons.
Cullen Jenkins, Defensive Tackle
3 of 5Coming off a Super Bowl win with the Green Bay Packers, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins signed with the Eagles this summer.
Jenkins is an effective pass rusher from the tackle position. He should help the Eagles shore up their run defense as well.
Jenkins has averaged 4.5 sacks and 27 tackles per year, before joining the Eagles. Through eight weeks in 2011, Jenkins has five sacks with the Eagles.
Jason Babin, Defensive End
4 of 5Defensive end Jason Babin returned to the Eagles after his Pro Bowl 2010 season with the Tennessee Titans.
Babin, who played with the Eagles during the 2009 season, had 12.5 sacks and 58 tackles with the Titans in 2010.
Babin teams with defensive end Trent Cole, who has four sacks this season. The Eagles' defensive line should be an imposing test for a Bears' offensive line that has struggled to protect Jay Cutler.
Babin already has nine sacks for the Eagles in 2011.
Nnamdi Asomugha, Cornerback
5 of 5One of most sought after free agents in 2011 was Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. The Eagles surprised the league by signing Asomugha during a busy offseason in Philadelphia.
While playing with Oakland, Asomugha became an elite cornerback. He has made the Pro Bowl the last three seasons.
While Asomugha defends most passes that come his way, quarterbacks rarely throw to his side of the field because of his shutdown abilities.
Asomugha has two interceptions for the Eagles through Week 8 in 2011.
