BCS Rankings: Oregon Ducks and More Teams That Will Fall Despite Victories
There are few things more disappointing about the BCS rankings than watching your favorite team fail to make up any ground even after a win. However, it's a fate several teams have to deal with on a weekly basis. Here are three teams in that situation following Week 9.
Virginia Tech Hokies
It was a struggle every step of the way against Duke, but Virginia Tech found a way to escape with the victory. Even though the offense gained more than 430 yards, it only scored 14 points and none in the second half, as Duke had several chances to pull off the upset.
The Hokies remained atop the ACC Coastal division with the win, but it won't help them in the BCS standings. A game against Georgia Tech on Nov. 10 will probably decide which team advances to the conference championship game for a chance at an automatic BCS berth.
Virginia Tech will need to play a lot better than it did on Saturday to prevail in that game.
South Carolina Gamecocks
Even though Steve Spurrier's squad got another strong defense performance, the offense remains in turmoil after Marcus Lattimore was lost for the season with a knee injury and Stephen Garcia was dismissed from the team. It showed against Tennessee.
Connor Shaw and Brandon Wilds are both adjusting to their new roles, but don't have much more time to figure it out with a clash against Arkansas on the slate for next week. It's a must-win game if the Gamecocks want to maintain their SEC East lead.
The Razorbacks will pack the box and force Shaw to win the game for South Carolina, which will have a major impact on the nation's top conference.
Oregon Ducks
While Oregon picked up its seventh straight win against Washington State, the voters won't be impressed by a two-score win over a vastly inferior team. And a quarterback controversy may be brewing after Darron Thomas was removed at halftime in favor of Bryan Bennett.
Oklahoma picked up an impressive win over Kansas State and will likely jump over the Ducks to become the top-ranked one-loss team in the nation. That's bad news for Oregon, who had held that title for several weeks.
The Ducks have three straight tough games the horizon, so not all BCS hope is lost.
