UFC 137 Results: Donald Cerrone and the Top 10 Lightweights in the UFC
On Saturday night, two of the top lightweights in the world were in action as Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone faced off against Dennis Siver.
Many expected this fight to be an absolute brawl, and boy were they right.
Early in the bout, Cerrone rocked Siver with a left leg kick followed by a left head kick.
From there, Cerrone rocked Siver again, which set up the fight-ending rear-naked choke from Cerrone.
Cerrone has now proven himself as a top lightweight, but where exactly does he rank?
10. Dennis Siver
1 of 10On Saturday night, Dennis Siver's four-fight win streak came screeching to a halt when he was oustruck and then submitted by Donald Cerrone.
Before the loss to Cerrone, Siver had wins over Matt Wiman, George Sotiropoulos, Andre Winner and Spencer Fisher.
Siver has some of the best striking in the lightweight division, but it wasn't enough to hang with Cerrone.
9. Melvin Guillard
2 of 10Melvin Guillard got knocked down in the rankings after his 47-second loss by submission to Joe Lauzon.
Coming into the fight against Lauzon at UFC 136, Guillard was likely one or two fights away from a title shot, but Lauzon ended that hype in impressive fashion.
Guillard is still one of the most talented and dangerous fighters in the lightweight division, but he has to start his climb back up.
Guillard has notable victories over Shane Roller, Evan Dunham, Gleison Tibau and Dennis Siver.
8. Joe Lauzon
3 of 10Melvin Guillard falls way down, and Joe Lauzon shoots way up.
Lauzon submitted Guillard in a mere 47 seconds and in the process got his name in the mix for a shot at the lightweight title.
Lauzon is 5-2 in his past seven matches, but has been a bit inconsistent, never stringing together more than two wins.
Perhaps his win last night could be the start of a title run, but at 27 years of age, Lauzon still has a lot of time.
Lauzon has notable victories over Melvin Guillard, Gabe Ruediger, Jeremy Stephens, Brandon Melendez, Jens Pulver and Mike Brown.
7. Donald Cerrone
4 of 10Believe me, I want to put him higher, I really do. But when you see the guys above him, you'll see why Donald Cerrone is where he is.
Cerrone is currently on a six-fight win streak, four of those wins coming in the UFC, and all four have come this year.
So far in his UFC career, Cerrone has three finishes, a Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night, and a Knockout of the Night.
Talk about impressive.
6. Anthony Pettis
5 of 10Now that we're seeing more of the WEC guys, we can start to figure out where they fit in, and they're some of the top guys in the UFC.
Pettis has two losses in his career, the most recent of which came to Clay Guida, who is currently in the running for a No. 1 contender spot.
At UFC 136, Pettis wanted to showcase his wrestling, and he did that en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Pettis has notable victories over Jeremy Stephens, Ben Henderson and Shane Roller.
5. Jim Miller
6 of 10Jim Miller, even after his loss to Ben Henderson, is still one of the top lightweights in MMA today.
Miller is 20-3 in his career, and his only losses have come to Henderson, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
It can't be argued that he's not an elite lightweight.
Jim hasn't fought since his loss to Henderson, but something should be announced soon. Perhaps a fight against Maynard is in the cards for Miller.
Miller has notable victories over Charles Oliveira, Gleison Tibau, Mark Bocek, Duane Ludwig, Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman.
4. Ben Henderson
7 of 10Ben Henderson is the former WEC lightweight champion and is one fight away from a shot at UFC gold.
Many know Henderson as the guy on the receiving end of the "Showtime kick," but he wants to erase that memory by winning a UFC belt.
Henderson and Guida are going to put on a battle for the ages in their No. 1 contender bout during the UFC on Fox debut.
Henderson has notable victories over Jim Miller, Mark Bocek, Donald Cerrone (twice), Jamie Varner, Shane Roller and Anthony Njokuani.
3. Clay Guida
8 of 10Clay Guida is a longtime UFC lightweight and for a while he was considered nothing more than a gatekeeper.
Guida has proven that wrong so far in 2010 and 2011, as he is now one win away from a shot at the UFC lightweight championship.
Guida's fight against Ben Henderson will likely be a Fight of the Year candidate, and I can't wait for it.
Guida has notable victories over Anthony Pettis, Takanori Gomi, Nate Diaz, Mac Danzig and Josh Thomson.
2. Gray Maynard
9 of 10Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the Jon Fitch of the lightweight division.
Yes, Gray Maynard did just lose to Frankie Edgar, but he did fight to a draw with him, and he still holds a victory over him.
Maynard is the clear number two lightweight in the UFC, but he's not likely to get another shot at the belt as long as Frankie Edgar is holding it.
Although he might not have another title shot for a while, it looks as though all roads to the title go through Gray.
Maynard has notable victories over Kenny Florian, Nate Diaz, Roger Huerta, Jim Miller, Frankie Edgar and Dennis Siver.
1. Frankie Edgar
10 of 10Frankie Edgar is the obvious choice here.
Edgar avenged the only loss, and draw, of his career at UFC 136 when he handed Gray Maynard a fourth-round TKO defeat.
Edgar now has a long line of contenders coming after him for the belt, but he'll be ready for them.
Edgar is well on his way to becoming the greatest lightweight in MMA history.
