UFC 137 Results: What's Next for Main Card Winners
UFC 137 was originally supposed to feature a title fight between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz. Instead, Diaz took on a former two-division champion in B.J. Penn and gave him one of the biggest beatings of his 22-fight UFC career.
After the fight, Diaz called out St-Pierre, who was in attendance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Other fighters on the main card include Cheick Kongo, Matt Mitrione, Scott Jorgensen, Mirko Cro Cop, Roy Nelson and Hatsu Hioki.
This is what's next for the winners of those bouts.
Hatsu Hioki Def. George Roop by Split Decision
1 of 5Featherweight prospect Hatsu Hioki is arguably the greatest Japanese fighter in the UFC at the moment, but his split-decision victory over George Roop didn't meet the expectations of those wanting to see him finally make a splash in the UFC.
His 25-4-2 record includes some very impressive victories, but this won't go down as his most memorable. It will take another fight or two to get him prepared for UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
A fight versus the winner of the upcoming Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garzo bout could be the right one.
Scott Jorgensen Def. Jeff Curran by Unanimous Decision
2 of 5Scott Jorgensen is a top five bantamweight in the UFC, and his unanimous decision victory over MMA veteran Jeff Curran gave him a chance to showcase many of the skills that have gotten him to that position.
If Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto wins his next fight at UFC on Fox, he could produce a very interesting challenge, and one that promises to deliver some fireworks.
Jorgensen is a long way from a potential rematch with UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, but he can look to put on exciting fights while showcasing his ever-improving skill set.
Roy Nelson Def. Mirko Cro Cop by TKO in Round 3
3 of 5In a battle of heavyweights, Roy Nelson and Mirko Cro Cop fought three hard rounds before "Big Country" eventually got to his opponent in the third to win by TKO.
Cro Cop hoped to go out on a victory, but Nelson didn't let his two fight losing streak go any farther. With the victory, he puts his losses against Frank Mir and Junior dos Santos to the side for now.
During the post-fight interview, Nelson made the notion that he didn't have much time left in the sport and preceded to call out the winner of Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos.
He might not be there just yet, but there are few matches he could take in the shallow heavyweight contender's bracket.
A fight versus the loser of the upcoming Alistair Overeem vs. Brock Lesnar matchup could suit him well, or if he wants to take on someone coming off a win, he could take a fight with Cheick Kongo, who was seen beating Matt Mitrione on the same card as Nelson.
Cheick Kongo Def. Matt Mitrione by Unanimous Decision
4 of 5Cheick Kongo picked up a victory over undefeated heavyweight Matt Mitrione in the co-main event of UFC 137, but it wasn't the type of thrilling UFC victory he had earlier this year when he knocked out Pat Barry.
It was a tense battle for the better part of three rounds with Kongo using his range and superior striking to keep Mitrione guessing on what was going to come next.
Kongo put a stamp on the fight when he took Mitrione down in Round 3 to win a unanimous decision.
As stated in the previous slide, Kongo can face Roy Nelson, who was victorious versus Mirko Cro Cop earlier in the evening.
Nick Diaz Def. B.J. Penn by Unanimous Decision
5 of 5After Nick Diaz's impressive victory over B.J. Penn in the main event, the former Strikeforce welterweight champion called out current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in the post-fight interview.
His wish has been granted, and he will face the Canadian superstar during Super Bowl weekend, 2012. St-Pierre's original opponent, Carlos Condit, has agreed to step aside and let the pound-for-pound star get his chance to make Diaz eat his words, and it will go down as one of 2012's most anticipated matchups.
