Dana White Pushes UFC Into Future With Stance on Gay Fighters

Michael MillOct 29, 2011

After accusations from organizations calling out the UFC and president Dana White for being anti-gay, White has come forth with his stance on the matter.

The Culinary Union and others had apparently written petitions and sent letters to Fox asking for the sponsors to refuse to support the organization due to a homophobic and hateful history.

White insists that these accusations are completely false and that he would actually support any gay fighter who wished to come out.

“I’ll tell you right now, if there was a gay fighter in UFC, I wish he would come out. I could care less if there’s a gay fighter in the UFC. There probably is and there’s probably more than one.”

I believe every word that White says, despite what past instances may suggest.

There are instances in the past where White has said some things that he has later regretted. The most notable was his hateful words towards a female journalist.

I don't support these actions, but people need to understand the atmosphere of a sport like mixed martial arts.

People are going to swear and occasionally say hateful things. Does that make it right? Of course not. But these people are in a business where their job is to beat the hell out of each other.

It's not a friendly business. People are going to say and do things that make others uncomfortable.

I don't think White hates women, even if his comments would suggest otherwise. I think he was angry and let his passionate personality get the better of him. That doesn't mean what he said was right.

At the same time, that also doesn't mean that the UFC is a organization that is discriminating people based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

Another key instance that is being cited is Minotauro Nogueira's comments about how he wouldn't want to fight or train a gay fighter.

Are Norgueira's comments justified? Not at all.

Once again, that doesn't mean that the UFC is anti-gay. It means that a single individual is opinionated on the matter.

There are people in every occupation that feel the same way. There are athletes in a bunch of other sports that probably share similar opinions.

That doesn't mean that the organization shares those opinions.

This is a fight that can't be won by either side. Unfortunately, it's a fight that shouldn't even have to be fought.
