BCS Rankings 2011: Oklahoma Sooners and Teams That Will Rise
Last week teams like Oklahoma, West Virginia and Auburn all fell short in their respective games. But for two of those three teams the loss will not end the quest for a berth in one of the prestigious BCS bowl games.
In college football there are times when a team may not play up to its talent level, resulting in a crushing defeat. That type of stuff happens all the time in football. On any given week a lesser team can rise up and dethrone a ranked team.
It does not mean that the team who was upset has diminished in talent. It just means that they played a bad week of football. And because of that bad week, they will be punished in the following BCS standings.
However, for those three teams that lost last week, they will take that loss as a lesson on how they have to focus more at the task at hand.
But how will they all rebound this week?
Oklahoma Sooners
In the history of head coach Bob Stoops and this Oklahoma program, the last time Stoops lost in back-to-back games was in the ’99 season. That’s over 10 years of Stoops and this Oklahoma program taking their mistakes from the previous week and correcting them.
This week the Sooners do have one of their tougher games of the season, as they play the No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats.
Even with the loss last week and being on the road, OU is still a double-digit point favorite in this game (13). The oddsmakers know OU is a better team, OU fans know they have a better team and after Saturday’s game, you will see that OU will rise back up the BCS standings.
West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia took a road game against Syracuse too lightly and paid for it, as the Mountaineers were blown out by the Orange.
This week as they are on the road again against Rutgers, you will see a different WVU team that will do a better job in protecting its QB, Geno Smith. The Mountaineers will give Geno time in the pocket to find his speedy receivers.
Even with a loss last week, West Virginia is still the best team in the Big East and is the most talented team.
Look for WVU to beat Rutgers this week, taking back its place in the Top 20 of the BCS standings.
Auburn Tigers
Auburn somehow survived to stay in the BCS standings last week, even after being crushed by LSU on the road. This week against a bad Ole Miss team the Tigers will rebound with a victory, thus continuing their yo-yo season.
The win will raise the Tigers in the BCS standings, giving them a great shot to get into a prominent bowl game.
These are three teams that suffered crushing losses last week, but each of them will rebound nicely this week.
