WWE Rumors: Is Giving Mason Ryan the United States Title a Smart Idea?
The WWE is in a very interesting stage in regards to championships. As of the past couple months, the company seems to have begun to pay the special attention due to its titles and their holders, and I have to say that being a champion in the 'E is slowly starting to mean something again.
Mark Henry has had a very dominant run as the World Heavyweight Champion in what is his first world title reign since joining the company 15 years ago. Beth Phoenix is your Divas Champion, and (note this) her last title defense ended in a clean pinfall. Cody Rhodes has brought back the retro Intercontinental title and seems set for a good run. Alberto Del Rio (finally) pulled off a pay-per-view title defense, retaining his WWE championship against The Last Son of Krypton at Vengeance. Air Boom have possession of the tag titles and have had an impressive four title defenses in two months.

And now, the United States title.
Dolph Ziggler has had a rather impressive reign, but it has been impressive more in its length than in the events that have happened. Not many interesting, exciting or even remotely distinct things have happened during this title run to mark it apart from other United States title runs.
The only thing that engaged me was Dolph pulling off a good win in a fatal four-way match at Night of Champions, but no one—not even the commentators—addressed it as well as it should have been addressed. A fatal four-way is no joke, and the credits should have come pouring in with Ziggler's win.
One thing that makes a prestigious title is the need for a competitor to defend it, to have it with him, to keep it in his possession. So far, the Creative Team has placed little emphasis on the fact that Ziggler has the title or on the importance that the title holder carries.
Now, this isn't what this article is about, and I view this as a slight problem. I believe that in light of the title renaissance that is taking place right now, that issue can be rectified with good booking and promos. Ziggler has been a good champion, constantly wrestling good matches and improving immensely on the mic.
Which brings me to the topic of my article.
It seems that the Creative Team feels it is time for Dolph to move away from the United States title, and Mason Ryan is looking to be his successor.
That is all fine and dandy until you think very well about this and realize—Mason Ryan is nowhere near ready for a title reign. Of any kind, that is.
The Welsh doppelganger of a certain former WWE wrestler has exploded onto the scene again after returning from injury. He has taken out Dolph Ziggler on numerous occasions, and it seems like whenever Ryan is in the house, Dolph ends up staring in the moon's direction. He has stated in a WWE.com exclusive that he is interested in Ziggler's championship, and it seems like with each passing week, he is closing in on a No. 1 contender spot for the US title.
However, we have to question the intelligence of this decision, especially at a time where titles are only just starting to matter again. Mason Ryan, while very marketable because of his huge physique, is not the best professional wrestler out there. He is slow and seems to be controlled by his bulk rather than the other way around. Add that to the fact that he is really green in the ring, and you've got a bit of a problem.
From the one promo I've heard from him, he seems mediocre at best—not someone you expect to be hurling pipebombs on a weekly basis. One might say he need not cut promos on a regular basis, but in our day and age, a title holder that doesn't cut promos...yeah, doesn't happen.
All in all, I believe that giving the strap to someone as inexperienced as Mason Ryan is not a very smart decision. This switch, if it happens, will benefit the US title in no way whatsoever, as Ryan is not at the level to actually hold claim to a championship shot, talk less of an all-out title reign. The only thing Mason has working for him is his look, and that can only take him so far.
Besides, the WWE shouldn't rush things with this young man. A slow and steady build will only do everyone good in the long run. Ask Cody Rhodes. If the Creative Team is serious about molding this man into a true WWE Superstar, then they should do the right thing and wait. Who knows? Maybe someday this man will be deserving of a United States title after all. And maybe even a world title, if all cards are played perfectly.
For now, I believe the belt should stay on Ziggler for quite a while and then move on to someone else who can take over in full capacity. Maybe Zack Ryder or, in what should be a rather interesting turn of events, even Jack Swagger. It will be the right thing to do, and it will ensure that we don't have a stumbling, bumbling 290-pound man as our US champion.
'Cos no one wants that, right? I know I don't.
I'm Jo-Jo, and I'm not that damn good.
