Bears-Saints Thursday Night Preview

Nathan VenegasDec 10, 2008

The Bears look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive against the Saints.

The Bears do not control their own destiny when it comes down to the division title, but for any clinching scenario to occur they need to take care of business at home. The Saints are even more desperate coming into this game as they are last in what has been a surprising NFC South and needing lots of help to even think of making the playoffs.

The Bears are coming off a convincing win over Jacksonville last week where the oft-absent pass rush finally showed itself.

Pressure is a must to knock Drew Brees out of rhythm and force him to make bad throws. Brees is on pace to break the single season passing yards record currently held by Dan Marino.

If there ever was a time for the front four to step up it's now. The Bears secondary has been picked apart by the likes of Brian Griese and Kerry Collins so far this season. Imagine what Drew Brees will be capable of if given time in the pocket.

Reggie Bush will undoubtedly play a factor in tomorrow night's game as he is at full strength for probably the first time this season. His speed and vision make him dangerous no matter where on the field he gets the ball.

Speaking of making plays in space, Devin Hester has shown he is making the necessary strides and becoming a legit wide receiver. His route running is improving as well as his field awareness. If this keeps up, by this time next year Hester will be a premiere wide out in the NFL.

The Bears need to look to Matt Forte to move the ball on the ground on what will surely be a frigidly cold night at Soldier Field.

I see Kyle Orton checking the ball down for four and five yard gains even more this game due to the cold.

This game should be very entertaining as it has two teams fighting for their playoff lives. The Bears need a win and some help while the Saints hope their season doesn’t end in Chicago for the third straight year.

Players to Watch

Matt Forte: This has been true every week. I don’t think the Bears could have asked for a better second round draft pick.

Rashied Davis: His entire season has been inconsistent and overall disappointing. He’s been in the system the longest of all the Bears in the receiving corps, but has failed to step up when called upon. He’ll need some big games to gain favor for next year.

Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye: The main objective will be to pressure Drew Brees, but they also have to be mindful of Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas. Brees loves to use the swing and screen pass to his running backs so containment will be important.

Key to the Game

Time of possession: With facing an explosive offense like the Saints, keeping them off the field is key. The Bears need a consistent running attack to limit the number of snaps Drew Brees takes. Kyle Orton cannot win a shootout with Brees.
