NFL Week 8 Picks: Patriots vs. Steelers and Spreads You Must Avoid
The one trait you must possess in order to become successful at picking NFL games is knowing which spreads to avoid during any given week. Whether it be due to public perception, injuries or another reason, some games are just best left untouched. Here are three examples from Week 8.
Cincinnati Bengals at Seattle Seahawks (+2.5)
Cincinnati's strong record is due to a weak schedule, not overwhelming talent. Cedric Benson will be sidelined this week after his suspension was reduced from three games to one and Andy Dalton isn't ready to carry an offense on his back in Benson's absence.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
The Seahawks offense couldn't gain any traction against the Cleveland Browns last week and it's that performance that have many people thinking Cincinnati will cover easily. However, Seattle is a much better team at home and Tarvaris Jackson should be back to lead the offense.
There are so many uncertainties about both teams, it's just too difficult to make a definitive judgment about either one.
Minnesota Vikings (+3) at Carolina Panthers
The Vikings aren't as bad as their record indicates, having lost by more than a touchdown just once. Christian Ponder had a solid showing for his first career start, even though the stats don't jump off the page at you, and Adrian Peterson should exploit a weak Panthers run defense.
Cam Newton's play has been one of the most surprising stories of the season. Most analysts expected a much longer transition period and instead he's playing like a veteran. If they could generate a more consistent running game, the Panthers offense would be scary.
This game depends a lot on how Ponder performs in key situations (third down, red zone, etc.) and until it's easier to get a read on his ability, Vikings' games should be avoided.
New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers (+2.5)
The general consensus about this game is that New England will cover the spread. However, it's not going to be easy to go into Pittsburgh, against the Steelers solid defense, and pick up a win. Especially if they can't make the running game a threat.
The Steelers are on a three-game winning streak and haven't lost at Heinz Field all season. Ben Roethlisberger has thrown nine touchdowns during the streak should be in line for another strong game against New England's shaky secondary.
As the line suggests, this game is a toss up. Unless you have a crystal ball, look another direction for a smart bet this weekend.
