New England Patriots Set to Evaluate All-Pro Wide Receiver Terrell Owens

Tony SantorsaOct 24, 2011

Terrell Owens wearing a New England Patriots jersey? You have got to be kidding me—but there is certainly a chance.

New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio mentioned in a conference call held Monday that the team does plan on evaluating the five-time All Pro wide receiver:

"

"I think he's no different than a lot of the other players that have been on the street.

We'll evaluate those players when they're available. We'll look at our situation, and then just make the determination, if that's something that makes sense for us. He's no different than however many other free agents are out there currently."

Owens is scheduled to hold an open tryout this Tuesday, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports, and now it's clear that the Patriots will be a team that will be evaluating and could possibly show an interest in him.

Let's pause for a second and dwell on the thought that Chad Ochocinco and T.O. could both be sporting a New England Patriots uniform—who in their wildest dreams would have thought that? However, is that necessarily a good thing?

For starters, Ochocinco has been a complete bust and disappointment for Patriots thus far this season, as he's reeled in only nine passes for 136 yards and no touchdowns in six games. All in all, Ochocinco has generally been lost on the field, and it's starting to become a reality that his skills are diminishing.

As Ochocinco has been a complete non-factor this season, could T.O. be a possible replacement? You bet that he could.

To clarify all the false thoughts out there, Ochocinco was never brought to New England to be a deep threat—he was never that guy. Ochocinco was acquired to be another option for Tom Brady, but he's clearly not on the same page as the Pats QB.

Like Ochocinco and unlike Randy Moss, T.O. is not a deep threat, but he's a well-rounded receiver that could be a quality option for Brady—that is, if he's healthy.

As of right now, the New England Patriots are likely just treating Owens just like if he was any other free agent—just another guy on the market that could be a possible contributor on the team's 53-man roster.

There are no concrete reports of the Patriots actually being interested in Owens, but do not be surprised if rumors start to pick up in the next couple of days.
