WWE Vengeance 2011 Results: How the Main Event Sets Up Survivor Series

Erik BeastonOct 24, 2011

At the conclusion of the Last Man Standing match between John Cena and Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship, The Miz and R-Truth entered the ring and attacked Cena, ensuring a successful title defense for Del Rio.

For the first time, it was made clear that Miz and Truth's attacks were not relegated only to Triple H and CM Punk. They also set their sights on John Cena.

Now, the Survivor Series picture appears clearer than it had previously.

Before we approach that subject, however, let us rewind to earlier in the Vengeance pay-per-view to the tag-team match featuring CM Punk and Triple H taking on the previously-mentioned Miz and R-Truth.

Kevin Nash appeared toward the end of the match, attacking Triple H and leaving CM Punk to be double-teamed by his opponents.

It appears, coming out of Vengeance, that there is some sort of alliance between The Miz, R-Truth, Alberto Del Rio and Kevin Nash developing. With the Survivor Series arriving on November 20, the four-man team undoubtedly ushers in the return of the traditional Survivor Series tag-team match.

It was announced in a short video spot during Vengeance that The Rock would return to the ring for the first time in seven years, inside the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden. Not only that, but early promotional materials for the show advertise The Rock teaming with his WrestleMania 28 opponent, John Cena, for the first and only time.

The main event of Survivor Series, presumably, will be a four-on-four, traditional Survivor Series elimination match featuring The Rock and John Cena teaming with two other partners against four heel opponents.

After the events at Vengeance, the main event booking in WWE is clearer than it has been at any time in the past three months. John Cena and The Rock will likely team with CM Punk and Triple H to meet Alberto Del Rio, The Miz, R-Truth and Kevin Nash.

This would mark Nash's first in-ring appearance for WWE since his surprise entry into the Royal Rumble match.

It would be a huge main event match—perhaps the most star-studded of any the WWE has held this year. It would also be fitting of the venue and of the event. Most importantly, it would serve three very important functions.

First, it would wrap up what has been a highly confusing, at times incoherent storyline that has run since the night after Money in the Bank. That story has featured twists, turns, matches and long-winded promos featuring Punk, Triple H, Miz, Truth and Nash.

The never-ending feud has jumped the proverbial shark a few times during its run, and to reach its conclusion would hopefully stabilize the booking of the Raw brand.

Secondly, it would bring to a close a tedious and boring program between John Cena and Alberto Del Rio. For whatever reason, the two Raw Superstars have not had the chemistry the company had hoped for when they programmed them against one another this fall, and it has made for a feud that never really clicked with the WWE Universe.

Finally, it allows the furthering of the rivalry between The Rock and John Cena that will culminate in the biggest main event clash WWE has featured since Rock met Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8.

While both men are mega-stars in the industry and will likely overshadow many during the buildup to Survivor Series and WrestleMania 28, it is still important for the company to keep the match fresh in the minds of its fans and really sell the fact that it is a once-in-a-lifetime, monumental contest.

For the first time in several months, fans who watched a WWE pay-per-view have a clear indication of the direction in which stories and angles are moving within the company.

While the "crash-TV" style of booking the company has been prone to utilizing in the last few months may create interest, it also creates a terribly confusing and incoherent show. Clarity will allow for more focus and—to be blunt—a better product.

And this writer, quite frankly, cannot wait.
