BCS Standings: Kansas State and 3 Teams Whose BCS Bowl Dreams Are an Illusion
A chaotic Saturday in college football yielded a surprising new set of BCS rankings on Sunday, one that has given big bowl hopes to teams that will surely see them fade before too long.
The coming weeks will not be kind to these three teams, whose hopes of playing on or after New Year's Day are destined to dwindle.
Kansas State
The Wildcats better enjoy their No. 8 ranking while it lasts, because it won't. The success of Bill Snyder's squad has been a great story this season, and sure, wins over Baylor and Missouri are nice.
But a 10-7 victory against Eastern Kentucky and a 28-24 decision over Miami suggest that K-State's BCS stock is set to drop.
Especially when taking into account the 'Cats' upcoming schedule, which pits them against a veritable murderer's row of Big 12 contenders—Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas—over the next four weeks.
Arkansas
The 10th spot in the BCS rankings is not a bad place for Arkansas to be by any means.
Unfortunately, that still leaves the Razorbacks as the third wheel in their own division, behind No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama.
The Hogs have already lost to the Crimson Tide and, as such, need the Tigers to triumph on Nov. 5 if they're to have any shot at winning the SEC West.
Meanwhile, Bobby Petrino's boys didn't look so hot in their 29-24 win at Ole Miss on Saturday and must worry first about South Carolina and Mississippi State before they can even think of knocking off LSU in their last game of the regular season. Ultimately, Arkansas will have to finish ahead of Bama or LSU to have any hope of snagging an at-large BCS berth.
Houston
The Cougars have won each of their seven games this season, but still find themselves mired at No. 17 in the BCS rankings.
Which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, since their weak schedule left them out of the Top 25 entirely in two of the six computers used in the formula.
Kevin Sumlin's club can still earn an automatic bid if it ends up in the top 12 or in the top 16, but ahead of an AQ conference champion. That will likely require Houston to run the table, a feat that senior quarterback Case Keenum can help to ensure.
However, there's still no guarantee that a perfect record will put the Cougs high enough to sneak into the BCS. Chances are, one-loss teams like Michigan and Penn State will jump ahead of Houston if they win out for the rest of the regular season, thereby stacking the odds that much taller against the Cougs.
At this point, their best bet is to win out and hope that they finish ahead of the Big East champion, which is still entirely possible, but not all that likely.
