WWE Vengeance 2011 Results: What We Learned from Alberto Del Rio's Win

Drake OzOct 23, 2011

John Cena haters everywhere are rejoicing.

Vengeance is officially over, and Alberto Del Rio is your WWE Champion. More surprisingly, Cena isn't.

Del Rio successfully defended his title against Cena in a Last Man Standing match, thanks to some outside interference from the WWE's resident party crashers, The Miz and R-Truth.

The victory for Del Rio has him primed to enter next month's Survivor Series pay-per-view as the holder of the most prestigious title in the company, while Cena's future is a bit cloudier.

So, let's take a look at what Del Rio's win at Vengeance means for him, for Cena, for the WWE title, and for the WWE in general.

7. John Cena Is Headed for a Feud with the Miz and R-Truth

1 of 7

This one's rather obvious, isn't it?

If someone costs you a match, you're typically going to feud with them. And that's likely what will happen with John Cena, The Miz and R-Truth.

He's pissed because they prevented him from regaining the WWE Championship at Vengeance; they're pissed because Cena gets so many title shots.

So, there's an easy solution: Let them fight, even if it is part of a bigger Survivor Series match. The WWE doesn't have to make this all that complicated.

6. Alberto Del Rio Will Do Just Fine as WWE Champion

2 of 7

For those who aren't fans of seeing Alberto Del Rio as WWE Champion, I just wanted to let you know that I wasn't thrilled about it at first either...but he's growing on me.

His promos are good (despite his broken English), and he's always had a ton of charisma. But what he showed me is that he can really wrestle.

That makes three straight PPVs—Night of Champions,Vengeance and Hell in a Cell—where ADR has put on matches in that three to four-star range. You can't really ask more from your WWE Champion.

Del Rio's not going to put on classics every pay-per-view, but no one does. He will, however, wrestle matches that make him worthy of holding the WWE title.

Give this guy some time to grow and improve as WWE Champion; and if you aren't already, I think you'll eventually be impressed.

5. The "Conspiracy" Is Now Screwing the Baby Faces

3 of 7

The Miz, R-Truth and even guys like Christian to a lesser extent have all complained about the WWE having some sort of "conspiracy" against them.

The common denominator? They're all heels.

Well, the complaining from those antagonists has stopped, and the reason why is really simple: The baby faces are now the ones who are getting screwed over.

CM Punk and John Cena got the shaft at Hell in a Cell, Triple H and Punk got it at Vengeance, and then Cena got it once again when Truth and Miz interrupted his Last Man Standing match against Alberto Del Rio.

It certainly appears that the tables have turned, and now that John Laurinaitis is controlling Monday Night Raw, things are working out quite well for the heels, rather than the baby faces.

4. John Cena Is Not Going to Lose Totally Clean Anytime Soon...

4 of 7

Okay, we probably already knew this, but I had to mention it.

It took four guys—The Miz, R-Truth, Ricardo Rodriguez and Alberto Del Rio—to defeat John Cena at Vengeance

While I don't necessarily agree with that booking (translation: I freaking hate it) I think we should all realize that Cena is not going to take a 100 percent clean pin anytime soon.

He'll take losses here and there like he did versus Del Rio, and he'll even lose matches in relatively clean fashion. But he definitely won't pull a Randy Orton and lose a straight-up singles match after being hit with his opponent's finisher.

Cena's the face of the WWE, and that's just the way it is. Let's learn to deal with it.

3. But He Will Be out of the WWE Championship Picture for a While

5 of 7

Hey, he may not lose clean, but that doesn't mean he'll always be involved in the WWE Championship picture.

In fact, the booking of the Vengeance pay-per-view may have proved that.

Cena lost to Alberto Del Rio thanks to interference from The Miz and R-Truth, and it appears that Cena will be moving on to a feud with those two leading up to, and at, Survivor Series.

Especially since The Rock is coming back for that pay-per-view, I would expect Cena to shift his focus from Del Rio and the WWE Championship to his rivalries with both The Rock and the Miz and R-Truth team.

It certainly makes sense storyline-wise, and could presumably free up ADR for a WWE title feud with CM Punk.

2. There Is No Clearcut No. 1 Contender for the WWE Championship

6 of 7

John Cena lost at Vengeance primarily because of what The Miz and R-Truth—not Alberto Del Rio—did, but being that it was a Last Man Standing match (and those types of things are to be expected), he essentially has no claim to being the No. 1 contender for Del Rio's WWE title.

That leaves the WWE in a bit of a pickle at the moment.

Cena's not going to be the No. 1 contender, The Miz and R-Truth appear to be headed for a feud with Cena, and CM Punk has now lost two consecutive matches on pay-per-view.

So, who's going to step up and challenge Del Rio for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series?

It appears the WWE will have to figure out the answer to that question very soon, but it won't be an easy task given the recent booking of Raw's main event storylines.

1. We May Not See a WWE Championship Match at Survivor Series

7 of 7

In the last slide, I asked, "So, who's going to step up and challenge Del Rio for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series?"

But maybe I should have rephrased my question to read like this: Is there even going to be a WWE Championship match at Survivor Series?

I really don't know.

Monday Night Raw's main event scene is quite clustered at the moment, and The Rock's upcoming return is only going to make it more crowded. Theoretically, I could see all of Raw's top heels battling the show's top faces in a huge tag team match at Survivor Series.

Something like this:

The Rock, Triple H, CM Punk and John Cena vs. The Miz, R-Truth, Alberto Del Rio and Kevin Nash

So, that definitely leaves a WWE Championship match in question. Though it's crazy to think about that possibility, a WWE title bout just might not fit into the WWE's current plans.
