Pacquiao vs Marquez 24/7: Why Marquez Urine Drink Is the Highlight of Hype
The first time I saw Juan Manuel Marquez drink his own urine was before the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. After the fight, I thought maybe he should have drank Mayweather's, because he got the beating of his life. Either way, it is even more disgusting than Moises Alou's strategy of urinating on his hands to counter blisters.
Have these guys ever heard of protein drinks and Neosporin?
The HBO fight-hype phenomenon 24/7 makes its return tonight to do its last minute promotional work in an effort to drain fight fans of another pay-per-view purchase.
After the last two, boxing fans should be hesitant. Though I enjoyed seeing Mayweather slap the head-butting Victor Ortiz into a state of unconscious regret, I can see how many left that fight dissatisfied.
We don't even have to elaborate on the Chad Dawson-Bernard Hopkins one-and-a-half round fiasco. Needless to say, spending another 40 to 60 bucks on boxing doesn't feel right, especially if it's not Manny Pacquiao vs Mayweather.
Well, this one has it half-right; Pac-man will be opposing Marquez in their third bout. To the series' credit, the fights have been entertaining and action-packed. Their previous two bouts were fought at featherweight and super-featherweight. Though the fights were scored a draw and a split decision win for Pacquiao, one judge from each fight scored it in favor of Marquez.
Normally, a back-story like that, involving two world-class fighters, is enough to garner respectability and PPV purchases.
This, however, is a different situation. With the boxing world, both casual and hardcore, pining for the Manny-and-Floyd superfight and left angry after the last two PPV's, this fight just seems run of the mill.
HBO was sure to put a clip of Marquez' waste guzzling in the trailer for their hype show. They even realize it is necessary to create some intrigue. Both fighters are pretty uninteresting outside of the ring. They need to be opposite someone with a personality, good or bad, to sell to a large enough audience to do decent PPV numbers.
This may very well be another war. Hell, it may even be a candidate for fight of the year. Too bad many people will probably watch it for the first time on the re-broadcast a week later.
