Alabama Football: Why Trent Richardson Should Be Leading the Heisman Race
The Alabama Crimson Tide are currently second in the first annual BCS rankings and their superstar player is running back Trent Richardson.
So, is he worthy of being the front-runner in the current Heisman race?
Is there even a doubt right now?
Richardson's numbers are so much better than the rest of the nation that there is not even a doubt that if the season ended today, he would be the winner.
Andrew Luck has played nobody and his team is not even in the Top 5 rankings.
Richardson plays for arguably the best team in America (Nov. 5 will decide a lot) and there is no stopping this freak.
He has toted the rock 132 times for 912 yards (6.9 YPC) while reaching pay dirt 16 times!
Catching the ball out of the backfield is also a positive for Richardson, hauling in 15 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown (total touchdowns is included above). Once he gets up field, he is simply unstoppable due to his downhill running mentality with his physical presence.
Just look at his 76-yard touchdown last weekend against Ole Miss as this was just one of the soon to be many moments in his Heisman campaign.
It is amazing how Alabama just got their first-ever Heisman winner when Mark Ingram won it two seasons ago. Richardson is bigger, faster, stronger and does not have a backup who is stealing carries behind him (no disrespect towards Eddie Lacy).
Some argue Richardson is running behind a much weaker offensive line this season then the one he did two seasons ago. However, let it be known that this offense fully belongs to Trent. If Alabama loses a game this season it would likely be due to Richardson being held under his 130 yard game average (fourth in nation).
Alabama not only has a future NFL star, but they still arguably have the best player in college football. I ranked him third in my Top 100 Players on BCS Teams mainly because he is just a junior.
On a talent spectrum nobody has the right to say they are above him (save Luck, perhaps) and no team can say theirs is better at the moment than Alabama.
Their defense is also among the best, but let it be known that fact Richardson has as good of a chance to hoist that 8.5-pound prestigious award as any player.
There are still several other reasons why Richardson is the leader for this prestigious award.
One being that his competition is still a bit of mystery in my eyes. Clearly, Luck is the main contender but who is else can say they are here to stay?
Kellen Moore, Landry Jones, Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson do not have the same showcase game that Richardson does. Alabama and the SEC will forever remain king in sports let alone college football.
Moore really had his game already in the opener against Georgia and Wilson will have a few more starting against the top ranked Spartan defense.
Weeden and Jones must essentially wait until their last games against each other to make their legit case of leading or winning the Heisman.
Those contenders are all quarterbacks so they touch the ball on every play, however Richardson very rarely will be off the field.
In a showcase against LSU, he will have 25-30 touches in what is already being called, "The Game of the Century!"
The LSU Tigers defense has been an unmovable object and what better way to show off your filthy skills than to run roughshod against them?
There is no disrespect intended for all of the other Heisman contenders, but Alabama football will forever be popular and relevant (least with Saban).
Contending for a possible a BCS National Championship is one thing, but playing on the team that is arguably the front-runner to win it is another.
If Trent Richardson continues to go bonkers in the SEC, not only will his team play for all the marbles, but he will be rewarded with a solid stiff arm trophy as well.
