Liverpool FC Makes Deal with Club Nacional de Football
It has been reported that Liverpool are set to agree to another deal with Uruguayan team Club Nacional de Football. Damien Comolli is the man that supporters have to thank for the latest deal which would see Liverpool having up to five years of first choice options over Nacional's youth players. The deal was hinted at back in September, but it now seems Liverpool and Nacional have come to an agreement that will be mutually beneficial.
Recent signings Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates were products of the Nacional youth system, and an incredible 14 of the 23 Uruguayan players that were featured in the recent Copa America tournament had at some point played at or were developed by Nacional. Statistics such as that make the deal seem like a great idea, but what impact might it have on home grown talent?

As a brand enhancement this deal will let Liverpool tap into the huge South American market and perhaps gain valuable insight into what makes a youth system work. Obviously the main selling point is that it will make Liverpool a better football club in the future...theoretically.
Jamie Carragher has recently expressed his personal thoughts that players under a certain age should only be allowed to play in their own country's youth system. A part of me agrees with this notion but if England's youth system was to fail, it could lead to a huge gulf in ability between club sides from other countries. That would be a disaster for competitions such as the Champions League.
I think most Liverpool fans will be happy with this development opportunity and if it yields just one superstar player in the future, then it will ultimately be considered a success. If English youth players are good enough to play for the club, then young foreigners pushing them for a spot on the squad should only make them stronger and more hungry for success.
Damien Comolli will ultimately gain the plaudits when the deal is finalised, but it makes me wonder how long Commolli will stick around at Anfield. One thing for sure is that when he does depart, Anfield's loss will be another club's gain.
