NFL Picks Week 7: Denver Broncos and More Underdogs That Will Win Outright

Mike ChiariOct 19, 2011

Although lines are always subject to change throughout the week, there are several interesting spreads thus far for the NFL's Week 7 games. While many are sure to be dead on, or at least close to it, there are others that are a bit perplexing.

There are quite a few current underdogs that I believe should actually be favored, so there may be some considerable money to be made on underdogs this weekend. Here are three underdogs who I believe will win outright in Week 7.

New York Jets

The New York Jets finally ended their slide by defeating the Miami Dolphins on Monday night to stop a three-game losing streak. Despite the win, the Jets still look flawed on both sides of the ball, particularly offensively, where they went three and out on a number of occasions.

New York will have a very tough game this Sunday, when it hosts the 4-1 San Diego Chargers. While the Chargers haven't been dominant this season, they have played well, and are the class of the AFC West. Because of that, they are two-point favorites against the Jets, but New York seems to have some advantages over San Diego.

For one, San Diego is pretty inconsistent running the ball, and this is where the Jets have struggled most defensively. This will force Philip Rivers to throw the ball, but he hasn't had his best season and could have a rough day against New York's secondary. Also, the Chargers have had a very easy schedule thus far, so even an adequate team like the Jets could pose a major problem.

The Tennessee Titans are three-point favorites at home against the Houston Texans this weekend, and understandably so, as Houston has lost two straight games and will be without stud wide receiver Andre Johnson once again.

Despite that, I think that Houston is the best overall team in the AFC South, and they will prove it on Sunday. The Titans were on a nice roll after losing their first game of the season, but they were romped by an injury-riddled Pittsburgh Steelers team two weeks ago. That is the same Steelers team that Houston beat whilst being without Johnson for much of the game.

While Houston's passing game may not be as effective as usual without Johnson, All-Pro running back Arian Foster is now completely healthy and has been running well. The Texans will be able to lean on him, and I expect him to tote the rock well as the Texans get back to their winning ways.

Of all the lines for this week's games, I think the Miami Dolphins being two-point favorites over the Denver Broncos is the most questionable one. Yes, Miami is at home, and yes, Tim Tebow will be making his first start at quarterback for Denver this season, but Miami proved how awful it is against the Jets last week.

The Broncos benched quarterback Kyle Orton and traded wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, so they are counting on a youth movement. While that can involve growing pains, I think it will reinvigorate the stagnant Broncos. When Tebow entered in relief of Orton two weeks ago, he nearly led them to a comeback victory over San Diego.

Tebow just seems to have those intangibles that make everyone rally around him, so I think Denver will be a much-improved team moving forward. If that is to be proven right, then the Broncos absolutely must beat the scuffling Dolphins, and I believe they will.
