Week 7 Waiver Wire: Christian Ponder and More Ridiculous Moves to Avoid

Michael DixonOct 18, 2011

We've certainly hit the time of the year where we need to start looking at nice temporary replacements for injured fantasy players or those on a bye.

Look at the quarterback position alone. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andy Dalton, Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Michael Vick and Alex Smith are all on their bye week this week, so owners are certainly going to have some holes to fill.

Still, give these guys nothing more than a quick look and move on.

Mark Sanchez

Aside from the aforementioned Brady, opposing quarterbacks have not fared well against the Chargers this season. As a matter of fact, none (again, other than Brady) have hit so much as 200 yards passing.

The Jets offense is just not a very impressive unit right now. A 201-yard, one touchdown performance at home against Miami would hardly give reason for a lot of confidence in Sanchez to perform or for his receivers to help him out.

They are a struggling team right now, even with a win on Monday night.

Even if the Jets find a way to beat the Chargers, it's hard to see a great game from Sanchez.

Christian Ponder

As the weekly waiver deadline hits, I'll be really interested to see what happens with Ponder. Will a lot of people sign him, or will he just hover on the fantasy waiver wires?

I was relatively impressed with Ponder on Sunday night. Against a good Bears defense, he did move around a little bit and showed why the Vikings took him in the first round.

But now another fierce defense awaits in the Packers. Unlike the Bears, they will have had a full week to prepare for Ponder.

I don't see this match going well. The Packers have a strong pass rush and a good secondary. Look for the rookie to struggle.

Dexter McCluster

McCluster has just failed to perform since Jamaal Charles went down. He's one of a few players to hold multi-position eligibility and is just not getting the job done.

The Raiders' defense has some holes in it, but they do a consistent job of keeping their opponents out of the end zone. With Jackie Battle emerging, McCluster simply won't get enough yards to be worth it. He'll need to score to have any value at all, and this is not a good matchup for that.

Battle is a much better option, and is owned in nearly 75 percent of ESPN leagues.
