UFC Veteran Tank Abbott's Best Moments in Mixed Martial Arts
Despite a less-than-stellar 10-14 record in MMA, UFC veteran David "Tank" Abbott actually has quite a few moments in the sport that set him far apart from other below .500 fighters.
Abbott is a legend in the sport, and his "unique" actions deserve to be remembered since they were a sign of the times for MMA. Abbott's crass attitude and bar fighting experience typified the image of MMA in the early 90s.
His legacy is even more important now because Abbott is currently set to rematch one of his greatest foes, Scott Ferrozzo, in what may be the original Huntington Beach bad boy's last fight.
So what are the Tank's greatest moments? Read and find out!
Victory over Mike Bourke
1 of 10Abbott's victory over another below .500 fighter in Mike "The Rhino" Bourke wasn't spectacular but it was a victory that snapped a four-fight, four-year losing streak.
As such, it was one of his best moments since it showed that he still had "it" and, until recently, was his opportunity to ride off into the sunset.
MMA Fighters Take Supplements to BE Like Tank Abbott
2 of 10Maybe not one of the Tank's finest moments but certainly one of his funniest!
In this classic interview, Abbott disses not only Ken Shamrock but Tito Ortiz and even UFC commentator Joe Rogan!
Even worse, he claims that MMA fighters take supplements so that they can be like him! Imagine if great fighters were taking supplements to be like an aged, drunken brawler all along?
Victory over Cabbage
3 of 10Wesley "Cabbage" Correira was a staple of the extremely mediocre UFC heavyweight division in the early 2000s. There was really nothing special about the man aside from his power and his ability to absorb punishment.
If Shane Carwin is Tank Abbott 2.0, then Cabbage was Tank Abbott 1.5.
Abbott first met Cabbage at UFC 45, but lost due to a doctor's stoppage that Abbott protested.
He campaigned for a rematch and finally got one (although it wasn't under the UFC banner). This time, Abbott was victorious, knocking Cabbage out in little over a minute.
Knockout of Steve Nelmark
4 of 10When Tank Abbott knocked out Steve Nelmark, it seriously looked like the man was dead. It was even worse than Lyoto Machida's knockout of Rashad Evans!
The epic KO remains one of the best, and most worrying, knockouts in the history of the UFC.
Tank Abbott Borrows from Professional Wrestling Against Paul Varelans
5 of 10No this isn't about Abbott's horrific stint with WCW, but rather a certain technique that he used against Paul Varelans at UFC 6โgrinding his opponents face against the cage.
Abbott got Varelans on the ground against the cage and began to work some ground and pound. In between punches, Abbott pushed his opponent's head into the cage while pulling the cage into it, thus creating a sort of cheese grater effect.
This technique has been performed in professional wrestling in cage matches but hasn't really been done in a real fightโat least a real fight that the Tank hasn't been involved in.
Tank Abbott Gets Risque
6 of 10After "inventing" grinding an opponents face on the cage and battering Paul Varelans, Tank Abbott was interviewed. Instead of talking about his recent success, he made a very bizarre request.
He asked that the replay of his victory be turned off since he was "starting to get sexually aroused."
This is one of Abbott's most legendary and strangest quotes. Nothing like it has ever been uttered by another fighter (with the exception of Wanderlei Silva's admission that he wanted to have sexual relations with Chuck Liddell).
Getting Paid Six Figures to Fight Kimbo Slice
7 of 10Tank Abbott got paid six figures to fight Kimbo Slice when he probably just would've accepted a six pack.
Even though Abbott lost, he got an absurd sum of money for the effort he put forthโand he got to be on national television.
When these facts are considered, how can this not be one of his best moments? Of all the money he made from fighting, most of it probably came from that one fight.
Defeating Steve Jennum
8 of 10Steve Jennum was the only UFC champion that Tank Abbott ever defeated. Even though Jennum only won on a technicality (he was an alternate and got a free ticket to the finals due to all the good fighters dropping out due to injury), he was still a champion.
Abbott easily dispatched the American "ninja" via neck crank in the first round of the Ultimate Ultimate 1995 tournament, in what was ultimately a losing effort.
He would be defeated by Dan Severn later that night (an event that he likened to being raped by Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury).
ALMOST Beating Don Frye
9 of 10Believe it or not, Tank Abbott almost beat UFC legend Don Frye at the Ultimate Ultimate 1996 tournament.
Abbott was putting a beating on Frye, and appeared to have him staggered, until Tank had an unfortunate slip. The brief reprieve from being punched in the face allowed Frye to regain his composure, get on top of Abbott and choke the brawler out.
This moment was the closest that Abbott ever got to a championship, and it therefore deserves to be remembered as one of his best times in the cage.
Knocking out Jon Matua
10 of 10Tank Abbott's very first fight in the UFC was one that made him famous forever.
He made short work of 400 pound Samoan Jon Matua, and he did so in amazing fashion. Abbott knocked him out with such force that the Samoan's limbs were frozen in the air (the first time a fighter was "starched" that badly in the UFC).
To literally add insult to injury, Abbott then mocked the pose of his unconscious opponent.
Regardless of how tasteless the ordeal was, it was Abbott's finest hour in MMA. In one fight he wrote himself into UFC history!
