NASCAR Chase for the Cup: Why Jimmie Johnson's Crash Helped NASCAR

Jeff KayerOct 15, 2011

If you watched tonight's Bank Of America 500 at Charlotte, you witnessed the possible end of arguably the most dominant run in NASCAR history.  With just laps to go in the race, Jimmie Johnson was making his patented run to the top, challenging for position, when he spun out near future teammate Kasey Kahne.  Johnson did not make contact, but lost control nevertheless and crashed hard into the wall, destroying his car.

It was the kind of wreck that made you appreciate the safety initiatives NASCAR has put in place as Johnson walked away from a wreck that could have caused significant injuries just one decade ago.

When Johnson hit the wall, the major concern for everyone was his health.  However, once people realized Johnson was OK, the sighs of relief turned to jumps for joy, as the five-time defending champion just saw his run for a sixth title possibly go up in flames.

Down just four points and in third place heading into tonight's race, Johnson now sits eighth overall and 35 points back.  To those scoring at home, that's nearly an entire race's worth of points Johnson must make up with just five races to go.

Though it might be a bit harsh to state, Johnson's wreck was one of the best things that could have happened to NASCAR.

The Chase For The Cup has been devoid of drama the past several years, thanks to the utter dominance by the No. 48 car.  Usually by mid October, the chase is unofficially over as Johnson builds up an insurmountable lead.

However, his wreck tonight changes everything.  Instead of Johnson sitting up at top, it's now led by Carl Edwards, the most consistent driver of 2011.  Sitting just five points behind him is Kevin Harvick, and Matt Kenseth is just seven behind.

Overall, seven drivers are within 30 points, with Johnson surprisingly on the outside looking in.

Johnson's wreck is going to create a dramatic five-week push to the championship at Homestead raceway near Miami, Florida.  The question is, who will take it?  Will we see a first-time champion, a veteran like Matt Kenseth taking it all, or can Jimmie Johnson have one of the more impressive comebacks in NASCAR history and win an unprecedented sixth title.
