Auburn Football: Why The Tigers Need to Buy Another QB Like Cam Newton

John RozumOct 15, 2011

Regardless of how Cam Newton ended up in Auburn is another issue, but as evidence by their current QB situation, it would be a good idea to recruit a stud QB.

Heading into the Florida game, Barrett Trotter had only thrown for nine TDs as well as six picks through Auburn's 4-2 start.

And perhaps the Arkansas game was the deal-breaker, as they played their toughest opponent to that date, got demolished, and it was apparent that Cam Newton not being there was really that bad.

Even if you combine both Trotter's, Clint Moseley's, and Kiehl Frazier's abilities, they wouldn't be as good as Newton.

That said, when you do combine them, you do have one solid and complete QB.

In any event, when you look around college football, and even just the SEC, having a stud QB is needed to have success.

From Georgia you have Aaron Murray, Jarrett Lee at LSU, Tyler Wilson at Arkansas, and A.J. McCarron at Alabama.

Sure, guys like Lee and McCarron are more game-managing QBs, but had they not been good enough, their respective teams wouldn't be ranked as high either (even with their defenses).

Then around the rest of the country, you have Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Andrew Luck (Stanford), and Kellen Moore (Boise State).

All of the teams mentioned, except for Georgia and Arkansas, still have a shot for a national title, and much can be attributed to their QB.

As for Auburn, yes, it's going to be difficult for any QB from 2011 until the end of time to replicate what Cam Newton did for the Tigers, but finding a player who can be a solid pocket passer and be able to scramble when needed, well, is needed.

Right now the Tigers have two really good RBs in Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb, as well as a much improved defense since the beginning of the year.

However, not having a QB who's comfortable in the pocket, and doesn't take what the defense gives, especially in the SEC, you're bound to struggle.

This offseason, if coach Gene Chizik can recruit a QB who could possibly start at some point in 2012, by 2013 or 2014 Auburn could very well be back in the national title mix, because right now no one who they have to put under center is giving them that extra advantage.
