WWE Vengeance 2006: Top 5 Moments from the Show

Justin WatryOct 14, 2011

Vengeance 2006 was a very interesting show. Yes, it was built up as another "Raw exclusive," and it even featured a few legends who made their return. However, the event fell flat.

It just seemed like a three-hour Raw for $40. There were some bright spots, but it never did click. With that being said, here are my top moments from the event five years ago...

5. John Cena vs. Sabu

1 of 5

This match was one of the many WWE vs. ECW matches the company was promoting. Just like the others, this one was well done.

It was a hardcore match (likely to hide Sabu's abilities), but it was a fun brawl. You add in lumberjacks around the ring and you have a nice PPV match in 2006.

Cena won (as he should have), and Sabu went to Tuesday nights. Great job, WWE!

4. Kane vs. Kane

2 of 5

This was just about as bad a storyline as you will find. Not only was the feud doomed to fail from the start, it featured a dreadful match with a dead crowd.

This was one of the matches that may been better off left alone, but I had to mention it because the whole thing was just so terrible. The "Imposter" Kane won the match, but the feud was quickly ended.

It is probably best if we all just move on...

3. Nitro vs. Carlito vs. Benjamin

3 of 5

This was the definition of a "WWE spotfest" that you see so often down in DixieLand.

There was nothing to this match except seeing how high these guys could fly and/or who could connect on the most dangerous move possible.

The live crowd was more behind Carlito than they may have ever been during his run as a face. Shelton Benjamin was his usual self (nice mid-card performer). Johnny Nitro (with Melina at the time) was just there for the big flips and flops.

In the end, it does stand the test of time simply because WWE tends to stay away from these types of matches (as they should, just not worth it). Thankfully, WWE sticks to a much better in-ring style today.

2. Foley vs. Flair

4 of 5

This match was in North Carolina. This match was all about being in "Flair Country," and it drove Mick Foley crazy! What was promoted as a best two-of-three falls match was certainly never going to be a wrestling classic.

Thankfully, both men had a game plan. They would set the stage for SummerSlam 2006 instead of finishing up their two-week feud here. The bout lasted less than 10 minutes, but it was a great night for Foley and Flair.

They put on an amazing show, and they were just beginning their epic (often forgotten about) feud...

1. DX Returns to Face Spirit Squad

5 of 5

Sorry, I was not a fan of RVD defending the WWE title against Edge. Sorry, I also did not enjoy Umaga beating up Eugene with a bunch of legends. I also had no interest in Orton vs. Angle.

This entire night was about Shawn Michaels and Triple H reforming DX! Their opponents were five male cheerleaders called Spirit Squad.

Not exactly an even match, but it was five on two! As expected, it was a glorified squash match that set the table for the rest of 2006 for the Red Brand.

When I think of Vengeance 2006, I think of DX returning to the ring.
