UFC 137 Fight Card: What If Carlos Condit Upsets Georges St. Pierre?
The sky might fall. Pigs may fly. Hell may freeze over.
All of these are in the realm of possibility if we see a George St-Pierre loss at UFC 137.
GSP has become one of the most dominant champions in UFC history. When he fights, it’s not a matter of if he’s going to win, but how.
Of course a common question with any great champion is, “What if they lose?”
To look for answers we have to look back to the times we’ve seen GSP lose in the UFC.
St-Pierre’s first loss came against UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes. GSP lost due to arm bar with one second remaining. Instead of brushing the defeat off as a fluke, St-Pierre came back with a vengeance that culminated in defeating Hughes in their rematch to win the UFC title.
GSP would then go on to make history with Matt Serra in his first title defense. Serra, a 11-1 underdog, rocked the champ early and finished him in the first round.
Contributing his loss to a lack of focus, many fans expected to see a newer, better GSP in his next bout. Those assumptions were proven to be correct.
St-Pierre out wrestled NCAA All-American Josh Koscheck in his next bout and used the win to begin a reign of domination.
If Carlos Condit can pull off a win, something that seems to be more and more possible each day to MMA insiders, the welterweight division will be turned upside down.
Condit’s chances lie in his ability to finish a fight. Nobody is going to pick Condit to win by decision, which means he’s going to have to take his chances.
Judging by how the UFC has promoted Condit for this fight, a finish of GSP would provide a career highlight that Condit could build upon.
Guys like Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck could find renewed hope of a title run if GSP loses. Fitch, especially, could stand to benefit from a GSP loss. He was thoroughly dominated in his match against GSP and is widely considered the best welterweight not named George St-Pierre.
Beyond the possibility of new matchups, the UFC could stand to make a considerable amount of money. Having a new champion would mean fans actually have a reason to tune in for a UFC welterweight title defense.
St-Pierre is going to sell PPVs with or without the belt, so the UFC won’t lose their meal ticket to the Canadian market. A little change in a division that hasn’t seen a new champion in over four years wouldn’t be a bad thing.
But what of GSP?
We’ve seen him come back from defeats more determined and better. He realizes his faults and aims to work on them. A perfect example of this was following his win over Dan Hardy, when St-Pierre asked his coaches in the locker room what he did wrong with his submission attempts.
St-Pierre could have some interesting opponents if he loses the belt. A third match with B.J. Penn would sell but doesn't have a lot of demand. A match against his original opponent, Nick Diaz, could be a huge match up if Diaz can get past Penn.
Condit is a longshot to pull off the upset, but if he does, the shakeup that would follow would undoubtedly provide UFC fans with some exciting matchups and storylines.
