Brandon Marshall: Miami Dolphins WR Smart to Angle for Early Exit

Josh MartinOct 13, 2011

I can't really blame Brandon Marshall for trying to get kicked out of the Dolphins' game against the Jets on Monday Night Football. I mean, who in their right mind would want to chase after errant throws from Matt Moore while being blanketed by Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie?

That would seem to be the thought process behind Marshall's comments to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post:

Though Marshall has plenty of good reasons to get himself ejected from what is likely to be the Fins' fifth loss in as many games this season, his latest salvo comes more as a warning to Revis. Marshall has feuded with Revis since last year, when Miami's star wideout came over from the Denver Broncos and referred to former teammate Champ Bailey as the best corner in the league, ahead of Gang Green's great cover guy. This after Revis was less than impressed with Marshall's arrival in South Beach.

Marshall later went on to criticize Revis for his lengthy holdout from Jets camp, thereby stoking the infantile flames between these two football foes.

Marshall's comments to the Palm Beach Post, then, seem intended only to reignite his budding rivalry with Revis while adding intrigue to a game that isn't likely to have much. The Dolphins went from bad to worse when Chad Henne got knocked out for the remainder of the season with a separated shoulder against the Chargers in Week 4, a 26-16 loss adding insult to injury.

The 2-3 Jets haven't played particularly well in 2011 either, though they at least still have their starting quarterback intact and enough talent across their roster to recover and make a run at the playoffs.

The only thing Miami is likely to win this year is the "Suck For Luck" sweepstakes.

Fins coach Tony Sparano can't be too happy to hear about Marshall's intent to mix it up with Revis. Sparano's rear end is already firmly planted on the NFL's coaching hot seat, and losing control of Marshall, both on the field and in the locker room, hurts not only the team's chances of winning, but also Sparano's ability to maintain the respect of his players and the Dolphins' brass.

What's more, Miami doesn't have much in the way of wide receivers if and when Marshall heads for an early shower, unless anyone thinks Davone Bess and Brian Hartline are good enough to pick up the slack.

Or at quarterback, where former Carolina Panthers dud Matt Moore and Fins retread Sage Rosenfels will battle for snaps on one of the worst teams in the league.

Either way, don't expect the Dolphins to pull out their first win of the season against the Jets, with or without Marshall on the field for all four quarters.
