Fantasy Football Week 6 Rankings: Jermichael Finley and Top TEs

John RozumOct 13, 2011

You could make the argument that the TE position is becoming obsolete.

With offenses so focused on throwing the ball more, we're seeing a lot of four and five-wide sets, some without a TE.

And even if the guy is a solid receiver, there aren't too many TEs left who are just as good at blocking as they are at receiving.

Could be just one reason why the passing game has become the norm, but that helps those in fantasy football.

So, here are the Top 4 TEs of Week 6.

4. Jermaine Gresham, Bengals (vs Colts)

If rookie WR A.J. Green isn't open, then chances are fellow rookie, QB Andy Dalton, is going to look for Jermaine Gresham, who's second on the team in receptions (21), targets (35) and first-downs (11), but tied for first with three TDs.

The Colts have a banged-up defense, but they still have a solid pass rush.

If Dalton gets under any pressure he's going to look for Gresham, and that will only increase his targets, as well as everything else.

Plus, right now Jermaine is the man once Cincinnati is inside the red zone, because he's very good at finding the soft spot in the zone.

3. Ed Dickson, Ravens (vs Houston)

Even with all of Baltimore's weapons, TE Ed Dickson is No. 1 on the team with 16 receptions and 32 targets, and No. 3 with 11 first-downs.

This week Dickson should have his biggest game in 2011 as the Texans are without LB Mario Williams.

Sure the Houston pass defense has improved, but with so many other weapons on the field for Baltimore, Dickson almost goes unnoticed.

Expect the Texans to give more attention to WRs Lee Evans, Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith, as they are the more immediate threats.

That will then leave Dickson in a lot of one-on-one situations where he can emerge as a solid receiving threat in the NFL.

2. Jermichael Finley, Packers (vs Rams)

Jermichael Finley is second in all major receiving categories on Green Bay, except for receiving yards, where he's third on the team.

His return back to the field this season is clearly a big reason why the Packers are so dominant on offense, and he gives QB Aaron Rodgers a legitimate sixth receiving threat.

And for as much as Rodgers dishes the ball around, the Packers really have no reason to run the ball with Finley back to being healthy.

He's one of the better TEs in pro football when in the red zone, and since Green Bay throws the ball so much, he's pretty much guaranteed to dominate, regardless of the opponent.

1. Tony Gonzalez, Falcons (vs Panthers)

Here is why the TE position should never, ever go away, no matter how badly offensive coordinators want four/five WRs on the field.

Tony Gonzalez is arguably the best TE to ever live, is a future Hall of Famer and is arguably QB Matt Ryan's favorite target.

Gonzalez is currently second on the Falcons with 27 receptions, and 19 first downs, and he's No.1 on the team with four TDs.

If Atlanta is to avoid being upset at home by Carolina, Gonzalez must be Ryan's primary target on every play, as WR Roddy White may not be 100 percent.

Nonetheless, Gonzalez knows how to find the end zone, reads defenses better than any other TE and can out-jump anyone who's covering him.
