NFL Week 6 Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: DeSean Jackson and 3 Players You Must Sit

Andrea HangstOct 12, 2011

Three players emerge as risky fantasy football starts this week, one because he's no longer relevant and two because they're becoming less and less reliable. If you have one of them, and have adequate depth at the position, consider benching them for Week 6.

WR DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles (at Washington Redskins)

The myriad problems plaguing the Eagles right now must be contagious, with even the team's high-caliber passing game suffering from a error-riddled slump. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson seems to be the biggest casualty of the downturn, with only two touchdowns and a 21-catch, 410-yard season that has been up and down.

In Week 1, he gained 102 yards and a touchdown, but was held to just 51 total yards in the two games that followed. His 171 receiving yards in Week 4 dropped somewhat, to 86 and a touchdown last week against the Buffalo Bills, which saw him catch just one 15-yard pass in the first half.

Now the Eagles take on the Redskins and their top-three pass defense. If quarterback Michael Vick is to have much success in the air, he will likely focus on Jeremy Maclin more than he will on Jackson, as the Redskins clearly had his number in 2010 and have only improved since. Sit him if you can.

RB Isaac Redman, Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Jacksonville Jaguars)

Steelers running back Isaac Redman had his one week in the fantasy football sun last week, getting the starting nod while Rashard Mendenhall recovered from a pulled hamstring. Now that Mendenhall returns this week, Redman will revert to his usual role as a change-of-pace back.

The Steelers are a team that doesn't shy away from replacing starters with backups, if the backup has repeatedly outplayed the starter. They like to do what works now, not what worked in the past, and do what they need to do to win games. But Redman surely did nothing in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans to have Mendenhall concerned for his job.

As a backup, Redman was averaging 4.9 yards per carry. As a starter, with 15 rushes for 49 yards, he averaged just 3.3. While he's not worth removing from your roster just yet, he's not an ideal starter.

He has handcuff value if Mendenhall gets hurt again, and there's always a chance the Steelers could make a shift in their run game if they continue to struggle, so keep Redman on your bench and out of your starting lineup for now.

WR Brandon Marshall, Miami Dolphins (at New York Jets)

With starting quarterback Chad Henne out for the season with a shoulder injury and backup Matt Moore taking over the Dolphins' offense, it's hard to tell what fantasy value Brandon Marshall has, if any. Once the only Dolphins player with any real fantasy value, that honor has been passed on to running back Daniel Thomas (currently injured).

It's unlikely that the Dolphins will be asking much from Moore in his first full game starting for the Dolphins this Sunday at the New York Jets, and because of that, I don't see him throwing too many accurate deep passes to Marshall.

It's a shame, really, because he's a major playmaker when he's got the right quarterback throwing to him, with the kind of speed and size many other teams can only dream about.

While I recommend benching him this week, he may return to being an every-week starter down the line. His fantasy owners should sit back and evaluate what role he will play with the team now that the quarterback situation has drastically changed and then act accordingly.
