Theo Epstein: Landing Epstein Would Help Lure Prince Fielder to Chicago Cubs
For the first time in 2011 the Chicago Cubs have reason for excitement.
They are extremely close to signing Theo Epstein to fill their general manager vacancy. Right now there are only two hang-ups, according to Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald:
"One of them is that Red Sox ownership was still hoping to have Epstein remain with the team. The other is compensation: If Epstein is to leave Boston, said one source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Red Sox are going to want “something real.” Whether that involves a player, money or a combination of the two remains unclear.
"
While asking for compensation for a GM is extremely bizarre, that’s a whole different story.
Assuming that they reach a deal with Epstein, Prince Fielder could be a legit option for the Cubs as well.
Think about it, the Cubs are trying to turn the leaf and erase the last few years of horrible contracts and questionable talent brought in by former GM Jim Hendry. They’re ready to reinvigorate a fan base that has taken a beating unlike any other team in professional sports.
What better way to kickoff the new era than to bring in the greatest GM of the last decade and the best young p layer on the market?
Remember, the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007 and made the playoffs in six of Epstein's nine seasons with the team. The epic 7-20 September collapse has nothing to do with Epstein’s ability to put a team together.
With Epstein on board, there will be a seismic shift in the way players view the Cubs. Fielder is looking for as much money as possible and the Cubs are one of the few teams that can provide it.
If Epstein can convince Fielder of a two to three year rebuilding plan centered around the all star first baseman, I think he would bite.
Baseball has always been about the back of your baseball card and Epstein’s is second to none among current GMs. He has the sort of baseball card that can persuade Fielder that he is the guy with the ability to revive the franchise and potentially be etched into mortality by bringing the Cubbies their first championship since 1908.
It’s an opportunity like none other in baseball and with Epstein on board, Chicago has a great shot at reeling in Fielder and instantly legitimizing the team.
There is hope, Cubs fans.
