Liverpool FC: 5 Transfer Signings Dalglish Could Go for in January
All football fans love transfer windows. The gossip, the surprise moves, and more recently, the countdown buzz of by-the-second updates which take you right through until midnight UK time so you don't miss anything.
Liverpool are much improved this season under Kenny Dalglish, of that there is no question. However, losses against Stoke and Tottenham Hotspur have raised doubts over whether Liverpool are yet the finished article.
Let's take a look at some potential investments Liverpool could make in order to strengthen, whilst bearing in mind the board's new transfer policy of investing in young and/or homegrown talent at the right price.
Carlos Tevez, Manchester City and Argentina
1 of 5I know it's a long shot, but everyone knows that Carlos Tevez is available for around $60 million from Manchester City, particularly since his refusal to even come on the pitch in a recent Champions League game.
However, given the fact that the Argentinian may not ever play for Manchester City again, now is the perfect time for a loan offer. Paying the little man's wages and giving him first-team football for half a season may just suit both parties.
The main problem with Tevez is that he's home sick and reportedly can't find any good restaurants or entertainment in Manchester. Perhaps Liverpool, the former capital of culture, could provide the Argentinian the diversity he craves.
A fearsome thought would be the pace and work rate that Tevez could bring to the table. An almost mirror image of Luis Suarez in terms of style, Premier League defences would quiver at the thought of facing the duo together.
Likelihood of leaving Manchester City in January 9/10
Likelihood of a deal being done with Liverpool: 3/10
Eden Hazard, Lille and Belgium
2 of 5Eden Hazard has been mentioned with Liverpool more times than I've had hot dinners, but the Belgian wonderkid is definitely someone who could benefit the team.
With Stewart Downing currently making the left-wing spot his own, Liverpool still require some pace down the right. Dirk Kuyt has been, and still is, a great hard-working player, but one thing he lacks is real pace, and the ability to beat a man.
If Liverpool wants to get the best out Andy Carroll this season, a pacy winger would be the answer.
A potential stumbling block could be Hazard's previous desire to play for Arsenal, but with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri moving on to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively, Arsenal doesn't look anything like the force they were.
With Dalglish allowing Joe Cole to move to Lille this summer on a loan deal, perhaps King Kenny has finally got his foot in the door to make a deal.
Likelihood of moving in January: 5/10
Likelihood of moving to Liverpool: 7/10
Gary Cahill, Bolton Wanderers and England
3 of 5The first of three England starlets mentioned in this article, Bolton's Gary Cahill is my next hot tip.
Failed attempts in the summer by both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to gain his signature meant that he has stayed with his club until at least January. Now, firmly established with Fabio Capello's England squad, Cahill's reputation is slowly increasing, and a big-money move to a top club would certainly enhance it.
Jamie Carragher has recently suggested he only has a couple of years left in him at Liverpool, which would leave Sebastian Coates (still finding his feet), Daniel Agger (too injury-prone) and Martin Skrtel (hardly fearsome) as Liverpool's only established center-halves.
Cahill would, undoubtedly, be an excellent long-term solution for Carragher's retirement.
Likelihood of leaving this January: 8/10
Likelihood of joining Liverpool: 5/10
Adam Johnson, Manchester City and England
4 of 5Keeping the theme for Kenny Dalglish's policy for young English talent would be Adam Johnson.
Signed from Middlesbrough in February 2010 by Manchester City, the pacy wideman has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at the Etihad Stadium, which could now be under further threat since Samir Nasri has arrived seeking a midfield role.
There's a perfect slot for Johnson on Liverpool's right side of midfield, and Dalglish would surely offer more minutes on the pitch than Mancini ever could.
With Johnson hitting his 25th birthday next year, he is at the age where he needs to start playing regularly in order to make the eye-catching displays that made him so popular at Middlesbrough.
Another player on the fringe of the England team, Johnson would be an instant hit at Anfield, and could be available for around the $25-30 million mark.
Likelihood of a January transfer: 6/10
Likelihood of signing for Liverpool: 7/10
Matt Jarvis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and England
5 of 5The last in my top five tips for January is Wolves winger Matt Jarvis.
Yet another promising England midfielder is suffering due to playing at a club which is clearly below his ability. Despite being linked with Liverpool many times in the summer transfer window, no confirmed bids for him have come to light, and he has taken to his new season with Wolves by making some impressive displays.
Only a "big" club move will convince Fabio Capello that he is good enough to challenge the old names of Lampard, Barry et al for a regular spot with England, and cash-strapped Wolves could agree a deal for in the region of $15 million.

Likelihood of signing for Liverpool: 9/10
