NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Who Are the Current Super Bowl Favorites?

John RozumOct 10, 2011

As each week in the NFL season completes, the picture of who's actually contending for the Super Bowl becomes more clear.

Fans can tell which teams made a quick turnaround after a loss, and then there's those still left undefeated.

So to that end, here are the current Super Bowl favorites, and let's begin in the AFC where things are still a bit shaky.

AFC

New England Patriots (4-1)

Although the Pats have a loss to the Bills and both teams are 4-1, New England's road loss in Buffalo was a rare inept performance from QB Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick.

Also, there's still a lot of football left, and while the Bills are in the developmental stages of building a winning franchise, the Pats are already in that stage and beyond.

Maybe we'll find something else out as the season continues or even in the postseason, but until then, the Patriots remain ahead of Buffalo.

Now in terms of New England's weaknesses, well, their defense has certainly picked it up and has allowed only 40 points the last two games combined, as opposed to the 34 against the Bills.

And speaking of defense...

Baltimore Ravens (3-1)

Despite being on a bye in Week 5, the Baltimore Ravens look to be the only consistent AFC title contender.

Sure, we could also make a case for the 4-1 San Diego Chargers, but all four of their wins have come against teams with a combined record of 4-15 (Vikings, Chiefs, Dolphins, Broncos).

Whereas the Ravens have wins over the Steelers and Jets, two teams who were also expected to contend for the AFC title.

And even though Pittsburgh and New York may be underachieving right now, they're still a lot better than Minnesota, Kansas City, Miami and Denver.

As long as QB Joe Flacco continues to manage games and let RB Ray Rice and his other weapons make plays, Baltimore can win, because we already know their defense is going to keep playing at a high level regardless.

NFC

Green Bay Packers (5-0)

This one obviously goes without saying, and after scoring 25 unanswered points when down 14-0 against Atlanta, the Packers proved they can win multiple ways.

Adding to it, the win over the Falcons in the Georgia Dome further proves that their level of resiliency is far ahead of any other NFC team.

Their defense has significantly made strides since the first few weeks of the year, and the offense continues to play almost flawless football.

As for the rest of the NFC, there's just one other team that's one step back of Green Bay.

New Orleans Saints (4-1)

The only team that has really matched the Packers punch-for-punch, the Saints have run off four straight since losing to Green Bay in Week 1.

New Orleans has also won two straight on the road and plays a third consecutive road game this week at 3-2 Tampa Bay.

QB Drew Brees continues to play efficient football and is as good as anyone at managing a game.

The defense has played well enough to avert any more losses thus far, and as long as the offense keeps rolling, New Orleans should stay right behind the Packers until they meet in the NFC Championship.
