Oakland Raiders vs. Houston Texans: 5 Halftime Adjustments for Oakland

Evan AdrianOct 9, 2011

After being shut down on offense for the entire first half, Campbell and the Raiders got on the board on an impressive six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with just minutes remaining in the half.

And just like that, Oakland is right back in the thick of this game.

The Raiders have been far from perfect so far, but they have managed to make this a two-point game. Oakland can pull this one off. Here's five keys to making that happen.

Fantasy Football Busts You Need to Avoid

1. Better Protection for Campbell

From the first drive of the game, Houston’s defense has been in the backfield, breathing down Campbell’s throat. Unsurprisingly, Oakland has had trouble getting things going on offense.

If the Raiders have any chance at putting up points in the second half, they’ve got to give Campbell enough time to make a play, and maybe sprinkle in some no-huddle offense.

Oakland’s receivers have actually been open downfield, but Campbell can’t do anything without time to work.

2. Stop the Tight Ends

With Andre Johnson out, Houston will continue to look for Owen Daniels and Joel Dreessen more than usual.

And why not? Oakland hasn't stopped them. The Raiders absolutely have to keep up with Daniels and Dreessen in space in the second half, but it won’t be easy. Both guys have deceptive speed, as Dreessen displayed on that 56-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

3. Take Shots Downfield

Campbell threw a great ball on a flea-flicker on the first play of Oakland’s second drive. I think Schillens could have had an easy six on that play if he wasn’t looking over his shoulder for so long.

Oakland has to continue taking chances downfield. It will go a long way in getting McFadden involved, and it will keep Houston’s defense off balance.

4. Convert 3rd Downs

Clearly, 0-for-6 on third downs is not going to cut it.

The Raiders are very, very lucky to be down just two points. It's not impossible to win a game without converting a third down, but it's damn close.

5. Bring the Pressure on Schaub

Oakland has been blitzing in the first half, but they've had a lot of trouble getting to Schaub. He’s seeing the pressure ahead of time and making the right decision.

Oakland’s rush has to force Schaub to make decisions under duress or on the run. One turnover could make all the difference in the second half.
