10 Must-See UFC Fights for Jon Jones at Heavyweight
Jon Jones has only been UFC light heavyweight champion for a few months, and the world is already calling for him to make the jump to heavyweight.
In the history of the sport, there has never been a fighter like Jones.
One would be hard-pressed to find any holes in his game. He can do just about anything from every position.
With only three years of professional experience, Jones has already ascended to the apex of his MMA career.
Sure, there are plenty of interesting challengers waiting in the wings, but Jones' dominance over two of MMA's all-time greats, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, expedited his climb up the pound-for-pound ranks.
If he cleans out the light heavyweight division, what's next for Jones?
Apparently, Jones and UFC president Dana White have already talked about a potential move to the heavyweight.
The 24-year-old champion shouldn't have a tremendous problem making the adjustment, considering his incredibly lanky frame and enormous reach.
A move to heavyweight could be years away for Jones, or it may never happen. Regardless, it's always fun to entertain potential bouts involving Jones and the gargantuan stars of the heavyweight division.
Here are 10 potential fights for Jones at heavyweight.
Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic
1 of 10A fight between Mirko "Cro Cop" and Jon Jones only makes sense as an entry bout.
This would be a great fight to ease Jones into the heavyweight division.
Cro Cop obviously isn't the same fighter he used to be, but he should have enough left in the tank to at least roll out a decent welcome mat.
Antonio Silva
2 of 10Well, Antonio Silva's Jay Leno-like chin isn't necessarily impenetrable, but it's definitely sturdy enough to always keep bouts interesting.
Along with a thick skull, Silva brings a well-rounded skill set to the table, including world-class striking and an underrated ground game.
Would Jon Jones try to mimic Daniel Cormier by keeping the fight standing, or would he look to put Silva on his back and set up ground-and-pound?
Shane Carwin
3 of 10As teammates at Jackson's MMA, Shane Carwin and Jon Jones could be against facing one another unless there are title implications.
Carwin is a strong wrestler with brutish power.
It would be the type of fight that Jones would like to stay on the outside and pick his shots.
When he's letting those ham hock-like fists fly, Carwin has the ability to flatline any opponent.
Frank Mir
4 of 10It's amazing to see the strides former UFC champion Frank Mir has made in his striking.
He was brilliant in picking apart MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 winner Roy "Big Country" Nelson.
The great part about Mir's game is that his striking is only a branch out from his true base, Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Does Jones have the submission chops to outwit Mir's guard?
Josh Barnett
5 of 10While Jon Jones may not be comfortable being perceived as a villain, Josh Barnett welcomes the bad guy role with open arms.
He doesn't mind being hated, which actually plays into his favor when considering his grinding style.
Regardless of the reaction from fans, Barnett is going to stick to his strengths and fight his fight, which typically consists of taking opponents down and peppering them with ground-and-pound.
If anything, the pre-fight hype for this bout would be entertaining.
Fabricio Werdum
6 of 10Fabricio Werdum is one of the greatest submission artists in the history of the sport.
He needs to trust his striking more.
While submissions are his base, Werdum has shown the ability to exchange effectively with world-class strikers Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski.
He has a chance to threaten Jon Jones in every area.
Brock Lesnar
7 of 10Brock Lesnar could headline a card with a box of corn flakes, and the masses would flock to see it.
A bout pitting the former UFC champion and Jon Jones together would do monster pay-per-view numbers.
It would be interesting to see if Jones could avoid being taken down by a behemoth wrestler of Lesnar's caliber.
Other than wrestling, Jones would have a clear-cut advantage on the feet.
Alistair Overeem
8 of 10Outside of Brock Lesnar, Alistair Overeem is the most imposing fighter in all of MMA.
His freakish power keeps fans on the edge of their seats throughout a fight.
With Overeem, there is always a great chance that a fight ends in highlight fashion.
Jon Jones would obviously seek to put the big man on his back, but people tend to forget that most of Overeem's wins have come by submission.
Junior Dos Santos
9 of 10Junior Dos Santos is the best boxer in the entire heavyweight division.
His jarring power and ability to put together multiple combinations on instinct make him one of the most feared strikers in the world.
The only question mark surrounding Dos Santos is his ground game.
This question will surely be answered when he faces Cain Velasquez on November 12.
If Dos Santos is able to thwart Velasquez's takedowns, he could definitely be the guy to halt the Jon Jones war wagon.
Cain Velasquez
10 of 10It's hard to go wrong with a champion-versus-champion matchup.
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez would present the ultimate test to Jon Jones.
Velasquez doesn't just beat opponents. He suffocates them until they wilt under the pressure.
Would Jones be able to fend off Velasquez's persistent takedowns for five whole rounds? Does he even have the gas tank to keep up?
