Floyd Mayweather: What His Win over Victor Ortiz Means for Legacy

Mick AkersOct 6, 2011

With the Victor Ortiz fight long over, we can now shift focus to the future of Floyd Mayweather's career.

Although Mayweather did win the much-anticipated fight by knockout, it came in a controversial matter, so it is unclear to what effect the win will have on Money May's legacy.

Here are the seven things the fight means to Mayweather's boxing legacy.

Still Undefeated

1 of 7

No matter how you feel about the fight, the win still keeps Floyd Mayweather's record undefeated at 42-0 and keeps the biggest draw to any fight Money May takes part in: whether or not he'll lose for the first time.

The two main motivators that keep Money May fighting in the ring are of course money, and keeping his record unblemished to keep his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time intact.

Once Mayweather's career in the ring comes to an end, this will be just another W, and the controversial nature of this fight won't matter.

Still Has KO Power

The fight also displayed that Floyd Mayweather still has the power to knock out any given opponent.

Even though it came at a time Victor Ortiz was relatively unguarded, Mayweather still knocked Ortiz out, despite doubts that Money May was a fighter with knockout power this far into his career.

Floyd answered the question with a resounding yes, and let his future opponents know not to doubt his power.

Showed He Still Has It

As in Floyd Mayweather's last few fights, Money May has had lengthy time off between fight, making people wonder if it would effect his success in the ring.

Mayweather showed that unlike most fighters, he can take as much time off as he wants and still be at his best in the ring.

Mayweather Is Still Boxing's Top Draw

Although this was the biggest fight of Victor Ortiz's career, it was just another day for Floyd Mayweather.

The fight was the 14th-largest gate in Nevada's history. It is expected to have drawn at least 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, according to Boxing News 24.

As long as Mayweather keeps fighting, he will have the drawing power to bring big numbers and will keep his title as the pay-per-view king.

It Keeps Mayweather a Controversial Figure

5 of 7

Floyd Mayweather has long been a controversial figure for his antics in and out of the ring.

The nature in which Mayweather knocked out Ortiz gained worldwide attention from more than just sports media.

Mayweather is in the news often, mostly due to out-of-ring altercations,  and he will go down as one of the most controversial figures in boxing history.

Tarnishes Mayweather's Career to Most

6 of 7

Although it is more of a personal opinion, most media and fans alike feel that the controversial way the fight ended tarnished Floyd Mayweather's career.

Most felt his career was tarnished in the first place, so it is nothing really new for Mayweather.

Don't expect it to have any effect on Mayweather and his often brash personality.

It Keeps Open the Possiblity for a Manny Pacquiao Showdown

7 of 7

With every win Floyd Mayweather has in the ring, the possibility of Money May meeting up with Manny Pacquiao stays alive, although the actual chance we will see the two fighters square off is still uncertain.

Mayweather and Pacquiao both have to keep winning to keep the public's interest on the fight, and keep open the possibility that the world will see what most predict would be the biggest fight in boxing history.

The two fighters also keep boxing relevant more than any other fighters, and with boxing in the state of change that it is in, everyone should appreciate the two men while they are still active and excelling in the sport.
