UFC 150: What Could the Main Card Look Like for This Historic Event?

Tim McTiernanOct 17, 2011

Two weeks ago, I wrote an article about UFC 150, and what Dana White could have in store for the event itself.

Today, I'm going to look at potential matchups that could be featured on this historic card.

At UFC 100, there were two title fights, a matchup of Ultimate Fighter coaches and two other matchups with high-profile fighters.

UFC 150 is likely to take place around Memorial Day weekend, so it was difficult to try and figure out when some fighters could be fighting, but this is an early glimpse at what the main card could potentially offer.

Additionally, to those out there calling for five title fights on this card, think about the implications that would have on other cards around the same timeframe. It wouldn't work out.

With that in mind, let's take a look at a possible main card for UFC 150.

Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis

1 of 5

To kick off the main card, you'd have two of the highest profile WEC lightweights who came to the UFC, Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis.

Anthony Pettis recently said that he wants one more fight in 2011 and wants a high-profile fight in 2012.

Placement on a card of this magnitude would certainly qualify as a "high-profile fight."

Cerrone will be taking on Dennis Siver at UFC 137 and, with a win, could arguably put himself in the top five in the lightweight division.

Cerrone is a safe bet to put on this card because he has already stepped up for the UFC on numerous occasions, and it would certainly want to reward him somehow.

If this fight is to happen, it could likely be a No. 1 contender's matchup for the lightweight title.

Brian Stann vs. Michael Bisping

2 of 5

The ultimate good guy vs. bad guy matchup would have Michael "The Count" Bisping taking on Brian "The All-American" Stann.

This fight could happen because both are likely two or three wins away from a shot at the middleweight title, and it could be another No. 1 contender matchup for the card.

Bisping's next fight is going to be against Jason "Mayhem" Miller at The Ultimate Fighter 14 finale, and Stann was last seen at UFC 136 where he lost a second-round submission to Chael Sonnen.

Should Bisping get past Mayhem in December, he could have another fight against someone like Mark Munoz and could then take on Stann after that.

Stann's next fight is likely to be against another top guy like Yushin Okami or Vitor Belfort.

If Bisping gets past Mayhem and Munoz, and Stann gets past Okami or Belfort, this one could happen.

Cain Velasquez-Junior Dos Santos Loser vs. Brock Lesnar-Alistair Overeem Loser

3 of 5

The UFC currently has a mini heavyweight tournament, whether you'd realized it or not.

At UFC on Fox 1, Cain Velasquez will look to defend his heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos.

At UFC 141, Brock Lesnar will welcome Alistair Overeem to the Octagon with a No. 1 contender's spot on the line.

The losers from each of those fights could have a consolation round here, as they would both look to remain relevant in the heavyweight division.

Jon Jones-Lyoto Machida Winner vs. Rashad Evans-Whomever He Fights Winner

4 of 5

The ultimate grudge match could finally happen at UFC 150.

At UFC 140, Jon Jones is due to take on Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida. Should Jones get past Machida, next in line for the light heavyweight title is likely to be his former training partner, Rashad Evans.

Evans was supposed to fight Jones at UFC 140—and UFC 133—but the fight fell through due to injury. However, Evans is not likely to sit out and wait for a title shot this time and will likely take a match with someone like Phil Davis.

Should each get past their next opponent, this could bring in huge PPV numbers.

Cain Velasquez-Junior Dos Santos Winner vs. Brock Lesnar-Alistair Overeem Winner

5 of 5

And it wouldn't even be the main event!

The finals of that unofficial heavyweight tournament could also take place on this card. Any way that these two fights go, the next heavyweight title fight is going to be huge.

Cain Velasquez vs. Alistair Overeem, or Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar II.

Junior dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem, or Junior dos Santos vs. Brock Lesnar.

Either of those matchups sound bad to you?

This fight would be monstrous and would top off the most stacked main card in UFC history.
