WWE Hell in a Cell Results: 7 Things I Liked About the WWE Pay-Per-View
WWE Hell in a Cell received only a limited amount of fanfare and hype going in, due to the event only having two weeks to be advertised.
However, it was one of the better WWE pay-per-views from a storyline standpoint as the show progressed top storylines and angles better than most RAW shows have done recently.
Hell in a Cell didn't feature any standout matches, and while the wrestling certainly wasn't bad as a whole, it was the storytelling that made the show a surprisingly mild hit to kick off the final quarter of 2011.
1. Cody Rhodes Brings Back the Classic Intercontinental Championship Belt
1 of 7Look to your left. Now look to your right. Both of those wrestling fans marked out when Cody Rhodes pulled out the classic, white Intercontinental Championship.
Rhodes has already had a pretty strong run as Intercontinental Champion, and with Triple H's traditionalist ways continuing to influence the new WWE, Cody Rhodes' reveal that he would be carrying the old-school Intercontinental title from here on out was one of multiple highlights of Hell in a Cell.
It didn't hurt that Rhodes was able to defeat John Morrison while in his street clothes.
2. Beth Phoenix Captures WWE Divas Championship
2 of 7I've never been one to (publicly) root for wins and losses, as I leave that to the fans.
However, it was good to see Beth Phoenix go over Kelly Kelly and add some much-needed life to a feud where the heel was unsuccessful in her first two attempts at capturing the elusive championship.
It'll be interesting to see where WWE goes from here as they could possibly throw Eve into the equation as a possible challenger.
3. Booker T's Commentary (at Times)
3 of 7Sure, Booker T isn't what I'd consider a good commentator, but he's slowly but surely coming along. Booker T already has multiple catchphrases that seem to be gaining popularity ("what duh hell?!"), which is always good for a commentator, and he can be entertaining when he's not going on random, nonsensical tangents.
It's more than worth mentioning that WWE Hall-of-Famer Jim Ross was also a welcomed addition to the pay-per-view as Jerry Lawler recovers from injuries suffered at the hands of Mark Henry.
4. Mark Henry Retains the World Championship
4 of 7It's no secret that I have thoroughly enjoyed Mark Henry's push on SmackDown, and this push continued with yet another convincing victory of Henry over Randy Orton.
I wasn't too crazy about the post-match antics that made the oft-dominant Henry come off like a coward, but WWE is on the right track in pushing Henry as an absolute monster, and he should have that belt for a while.
5. Limited Backstage Segments
5 of 7With only five matches announced for Hell in a Cell, WWE could have gone the filler route and inundated the show with a series of backstage segments, yet they instead chose to go with the more fan-friendly option of airing impromptu matches that helped carry the show near its three-hour allotted time block.
The aforementioned Rhodes-Morrison match was okay in that it helped the cause of getting Rhodes over as a viable champion (anytime, anywhere, any place), and the match between Air Boom, Ziggler, and Swagger was very entertaining as Air Boom continues to add value to the tag team titles.
6. WWE Championship Main Event
6 of 7The WWE Championship match was well done despite an otherwise routine format of two wrestlers in the ring fighting while one lay outside.
The finish was especially brilliant as the heelish Alberto Del Rio managed to lock John Cena outside of the cell and score a victory over the similarly popular CM Punk to get heat.
The fact that Cena didn't rip the cage door from its hinges and go on a Superman comeback was a positive in that I now don't have to read 1,000 e-mails of people complaining about it.
One of my pre-October predictions, in a B/R video that will soon debut, was that the WWE Championship would change hands from now until the end of the month. Looks like I'm off to a great start.
7. R-Truth and Miz's Involvement in WWE Championship Main Event
7 of 7The Miz and R-Truth's run-in after the WWE Championship main event was not too much, as it was during the main event for Night of Champions.
The fact that the cage was mysteriously lowered after they hit the ring did a great job of providing mystery as to who is "pulling the strings" behind all of the commotion that seems to inevitably break out during WWE pay-per-views these days.
John Laurinaitis is certainly a key culprit, as is Vince McMahon, however I am certainly interested in seeing how this whole storyline plays out come future RAWs.
