Philadelphia Eagles: Lack of Leadership Is Crystal Clear with 1-3 Start
The sky is falling in Philadelphia after slipping to the basement in the NFC East with their 24-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The Eagles are 1-3 and have now blown leads in the fourth quarter in all of three losses. On Sunday, a 20-3 halftime lead over the offensively challenged 49ers wasn't enough.
DT Cullen Jenkins believes the problem isn't with the talent, it's about their attitude:
"The biggest thing we're missing in here is the attitude. There's not that fire, that mental toughness that makes you think you're going to make it happen. And we've got to get that. At some point, the man in you has to come out."
Nobody is stepping up vocally in the locker room, and it appears as if head coach Andy Reid is not getting through to his team.
Human nature says you'll lose your edge when you think the world of yourself. With all of the terrific additions made in the offseason, people were already penciling in the Eagles to be the NFC's representation in the Super Bowl.
Now they have to win two in a row to reach .500.
I think the cockiness and lack of focus starts with Michael Vick. He spent the entire offseason getting showered with praise about his resurrection and how great of a QB he was. He lost that bitter taste in his mouth that had fueled him last year. So many players in this league use criticism as fuel, but when the shoe is on the other foot, players tend to get complacent.
Vick really needs to step up his leadership and stop complaining about the refs. He needs to get his team focused before the season gets completely out of hand.
Vince Young did much more harm than good with his "dream team" comments back in July. Little did we know it would be foreshadowing a sense of entitlement that has reached the entire team.
