EPL Relegation Update

Andrew McNairFeb 4, 2008

Another weekend has passed in the EPL, and it could be said we're in the final stretch now.

But as we discover every year, nothing is set in stone.

Fulham, if can you believe it, are back from the dead; with an excellent last-gasp victory over Aston Villa.

There were a few more interesting results in the bottom half of the EPL last weekend, but let's start at Craven Cottage.

Villa threw away the lead in their 2-1 defeat at Fulham, after Aaron Hughes' own goal had gifted them the lead.

Simon Davies then equalized, before the flamboyant Jimmy Bullard scored a magnificent winner with a late free kick.

The points bring Fulham back within touching distance of fourth from bottom Reading (who I will discuss later in this article), and one more win could see them leapfrog Birmingham City and Reading.

Not bad for a team I previously said were "dead and buried!"

Having said that, they need a lot more than just one or two wins to stay up.

So what of Birmingham?

In recent articles, I praised their spirit and style of football; but my opinion is changing.

The only way to survive an EPL relegation battle is to beat the sides around you and the Blues are just not doing that.

Great performances against Manchester United and Chelsea count for nothing when you lose, 2-0 to Sunderland.

Birmingham were at home against Derby County on Saturday (a must-win game for any team fighting relegation, as Derby have long been relegated) and drew 1-1.

The late Derby equalizer may not have been a fair reflection on the game, but it means one point from two relegation battles for Alex McLeish's men.

Reading have had some tough fixtures lately.

But Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to Bolton has left them in a precarious position—just a place and a point above the bottom three.

They were not a team I believed would be in contention to go down, but the possibility cannot be ignored now.

Reading need results!

Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic both pulled away from the bottom three with three points from the weekend. Bolton beat Reading as mentioned, and Wigan survived at home to beat West Ham United 1-0.

Lastly, Sunderland lost to Liverpool 3-0, but are still looking healthier than some—thanks to their mid-week 2-0 home win over Birmingham.

All six clubs need to start winning. A few wins now will keep them safe from the dreaded drop!

Have I changed my opinion on who's going down?

Maybe I'll tell you next time!
