Steelers vs. Colts: Pittsburgh Has Big Question Marks After Sloppy Win

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

If they awarded style points for victories, the Pittsburgh Steelers would have scored a 1.5/10—but they don't, and their 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts is just as valuable as their 24-0 win over the Seahawks.

A record of 2-1 is 2-1, but I'd be very concerned if I was a Steelers fan.

Ben Roethlisberger was a turnover machine for the second time in three weeks as he threw an interception and lost two fumbles. Sure the offensive line was beaten to submission by Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, but Big Ben has to do a much better job of taking care of the ball.

Speaking of the O-Line, they need to bring in some new guys in a hurry. The injury bug has devoured a large portion of them, and simply getting bodies is more important than getting talent at this point. Pittsburgh better cross their fingers that this trouble trend changes quickly, or it's going to derail their whole season.

Another big issue right now is the hesitation Rashard Mendenhall has shown when hitting the hole. He only mustered 37 yards in his 18 carries, a terrible 2.1 yard average. Take out one run of 15 yards and Mendenhall was getting stuffed on virtually every play. He needs to regain his confidence from a year ago quickly, or the Steelers offense is going to stay incredibly unbalanced and Roethlisberger will have to keep throwing the ball around 40 times a game.

The defense didn't have to play incredibly hard considering they faced a bad Kerry Collins and an even worse Curtis Painter. They made the big play in the fourth quarter, but it's worth noting that they gave up a long drive right after, leading to the Colts' game-tying touchdown. Colts RB Joseph Addai had 86 yards and a 5.1 average on a Steelers defense that is struggling to stop speedy backs who are hard to catch.

I'm not going to say the Steelers defense is slow, but it certainly isn't as fast to the ball as they were the past few years.

Through three games, it's clear the black and gold have a lot of work ahead of themselves before they can even consider making a second straight Super Bowl appearance.

They walked out of Lucas Oil Stadium knowing the heavy lifting has yet to begin.
